Humbuckers in an SG?

Hey all-
Wondering if anyone had advice re: replacement pups for an Epiphone SG?
Wanna go from Angus/Iommi to Clapton creamy tone (if that can be done with a particular set of pups!!).
Thanks!!

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

Have a look back at recent threads. CUstom 5 in the bridge is probably the holy grail for an Epi SG. I love it in mine.

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

Thanks, I will look into this asap!
(hmm...not that I really need another guitar.....but.....)

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

Angus from the bridge and Clapton from the neck?

Skip the Custom 5 (not enough kerrang for AC/DC) and go with a Demon. As far as Clapton, the 59n is all over the woman tone.

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

This isn't a recommendation per se . . . just what works for me. (For now, anyway.) :)

Invader bridge, Jazz neck. Best of both worlds.

Actually the "best of both worlds" would be a C5 with a Phat CatN; humbucker for warmth where you need it, and a single coil to bring life to the neck.

I use 250K pots on my C5's to shape the tone with less treble & more mids; still plenty of treble for bite. For PCN's, I replace one of the A2's with an A5 which really makes them sparkle & breathe.

I strongly recommend this PU combo. One of the best there is.

All of this is great advice, suggestions....I will definitely look into these pups all of you mentioned.
Now....gotta justify getting a new guitar.....:34:

As long as there's PU's out there that you're interested in, that is justification for getting a new guitar, or two...

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

I've had 'em both. The C5 does that sound well, but the Demon does it better.

Well, each to their own, but through my modest rig, I can get - to my ears - the EXACT sound for the "BiB" riff. It's awesome.
Not only that, it can do heavier music thatn AC/DC very well too as it has a lot of clarity without being thin.

I love that pickup actually the more I think about it!

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

It's not a bad pickup at all, but to me, it's a bit too compressed and it doesn't have the note seperation I liketo hear.

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

The next SG I get will have nickel Custom 5/Pearly Gates N.

I used to have a 61 Reissue, but didn't have it long enough to hear Duncans in it. I just kept the Classic 57's in there, which I liked, but it's not really the AC/DC sound. They resembled Derek Trucks sound more.

Now that I think about it, the pickup I have that most closely resembles Angus and Iommi is the Brobucker. It's got to be normally potted though, if it's got a nickel cover.

Re: Humbuckers in an SG?

 Wait, so some of you are recommending P90 tones, while others are recommending rockin' humbuckers like the Custom series? Hmm, that makes me think... :scratchch

Yes...a HB in the bridge & a Phat Cat (P-90) in the neck. It's the way to go.
