Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

It's been a few years, but I could have swore Scotti Hill used a JB in those days. Also I think they used a BBE Sonic Maximizer with the ADA back then too......

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Never heard or saw them having used X2N's in their guitars. I would say JB.

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

I meant what was used on the recording, not videos or live.....

I have old guitar mags from back then I'll dig through.....

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Both of them used the JB then with the ADA MP-1 and Sound City power amps.

And for the record, in the music videos, that's the same track as what's on the album, unless it is a live video. ;)

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Ricky was a young boy... He played a JB. He played guitar real loud and made videos to see.. :wall:

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

nah I meant someone seeing them using a x2n in a video didnt mean it was used on the track.

But Skid Row did do I live video recording for their cover of Little Wing, I remember Rachel Bolan saying it took like 25 takes to get it right.

But yeah still on the JB thing

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Still even if only a video shoot or not, I have never seen their guitars ever having an X2N. I was never a fan boy of theirs, but I've pretty much seen or read anything they have ever done.

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

I can CLEARLY see an X2N in the "18 and life" video...

They surely used an ADA MP-1 preamp, Michael Wagener used this preamp exclusively in the 80's and early 90's. Many bands shared the same ADA MP-1 presets when being produced by Wagener.

Having that said, I never dug their tone on that debut album.

However, their rhythm tone on the album "Slave to the Grind" is EXTREMELY GOOD IMHO ! Still, their lead tones always sounded paper thin to me. They ditched the ADA MP-1 and got their hands on some Rivera Knuckleheads which made a world of difference.

As a final remark, if they really did use JBs on the first album, then that explains why their tone is so..hmm....****ty IMO? lol !

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Just because that is what can be seen in the video doesn't mean that is what is in the guitars they recorded with. If you want to get technical about it, the guitars in the video aren't plugged in and there are 4 different guitars seen.

Their tone on Slave To The Grind is definitely better than the first album but I like the first record too.

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Marshall Abuser, you are "clearly seeing" a dual rails single coil pickup (Seymour Duncan Hot Rails perhaps?) in the neck position of that custom guitar that they both used I think they were related to Spector/Kramer somehow but the name of the builder was Hamburglar or something similar. The bridge pickup was definitely not an X2N, even if only in the video.

I remember seeing a dual blade humbucker in the bridge of Scotti Hill's guitar when he plays the solo. It has stayed in my memory because at the time I saw this video, I had an X2N also (one of my fave pickups of all time).

EDIT: I just watched the video again (it's been 10+ years since the last time I saw it...)and we can see the dual blade bridge pickup at 0:32. Obviously, resolution on youtube doesn't allow one to see clearly, but if I could, I would dug my old VHS tape to pause during the frame and see more precisely)

ok, had to check the video.. It appears to be a hotrails or something.. Not a full size bucker and in the neck position..
What is the pointy axe being played tho??? me likey!!

Re: Humbuckers used on Skid Row's 1st album?

Yes, the neck looks like a hot rails or fast track, but there is a very quick snapshot of the bridge pickup at 0:32 that shows an all-black dual blade akin to an X2N. Very hard to see, but still clear !
