Humidifiers...

Re: Humidifiers...

I wouldn't bother with an electric unless it was some antique, vintage thing that you were trying to preserve with some climate control.

A humidifier is well worth it for acoustics.

Re: Humidifiers...

Since I live in TX , I'm surrounded by huge amounts of humidity. Can't comment on your brand.

I received an old PRS McCarty years ago from your neck of the woods. The fret ends were sticking out as the rosewood had dried up beyond belief. At first I thought I'd gotten screwed. But, I figured, got nothing to lose. Took a sponge, wetted it down and put it in a zip lock, left the top of the bag open and put it inside the case underneath the tuning pegs and closed it up. Took two weeks and had to re-wet hte sponge, but the rosewood swelled back up again. Then I oiled it up and it was a real player.

So, unless your fretboards are shrinking, then probably not necessary on an electric. A cheap humidifier like parents put in little kids' rooms would work for your guitar room. I know y'alls houses up there get terribly dry in the winter.

My new Tele has a few sharp edges, but that may not be from the board shrinking at all. I'll have to look into getting a humidifier for my music area.

Re: Humidifiers...

I would think one of those cheap ones from Walmart would do it. I don't think you can overdo it. I was in Maui and went to the Mele ukulele place and all the doors and windows were open, raining outside, humidity up over 85%. One of the luthiers there told me, no biggie, guitars love humidity. Since everything I touched sounded golden, I couldn't argue. I can imagine you'd maybe get some rust on your amps if you over did it though.

Heck, get one of those three dial thermometer/barometer things with the relative humidity readout (cant' remember the name) I have one of those in my shop. If it gets too high, I crank on the AC to dry the place out a bit.
