Who here likes hybrid amps and why? I like them because you get that warm tone of the tube with the clean ringing highs of the SS I think its a good combo

Re: HYBRID AMPS

I have a Tube
an Analog Solid State
a Digital Modeling

some modeling pedals and such

but no
no Hybrid

dadgumit

here's that GAS again

Re: HYBRID AMPS

I own a Peavey Classic VTX 2x 6l6 amp. I like it for a bunch of cleans that are somewhat sterile , but still have enough tube goodness where you could consider them somewhat "hi-fi"..really good for classic country!
Make no mistake about it- they will NOT deliver the goods with a distorted tone- not that they are thin, but the distortion sounds crude. Not a terrible thing in and of itself for a primitive gnarly sound- for it has a very heavy and gritty sound with tons of pretty cool feedback , but for a refined tube saturation with sweet tone with space/air between the notes, you are barking up the wrong tree.

Re: HYBRID AMPS

It depends on the hybrid. Some hybrids don't really utilize the tubes much, which makes them about the same as solid state.

Just out of curiosity which hybrid are you interested in?

Re: HYBRID AMPS

It depends on the hybrid.

So, are you meaning to say that a hybrid can potentially reach the level of touch responsiveness ( i guess you could say "sag") and three dimensionality /spaciousness/harmonic richness as an all tube amp, all things being equal? Cause if so I disagree.

Re: HYBRID AMPS

I purchased a Kustom PH TUBE 12 hybrid amp with a 12ax7 tube in the preamp and I think its a great sounding little 12 watt hybrid. It sounds even better when you drive it with a overdrive pedal

Re: HYBRID AMPS

Serious question: Did you join this forum just to annoyingly ask the most generic questions possible? Your titles seem to be in all caps, which is what I mean by annoyingly asking (many even consider it rude, though not me – just annoying). And your questions and other posts are so basic and beaten to death that they seem almost robotic or computer generated. I can't be the only one here who feels this way.

Re: HYBRID AMPS

I like musicman amps. They have a tube power section rather than a tube preamp, but some models also had a 12ax7 in the PI slot also.

Re: HYBRID AMPS

no I joined the forum to get some answers Ive been playing through a SS amp for yrs and the hybrid and tube stuff is all new to me. And I just wanted to know a few things sorry my ALL CAPS BOTHERS YOU. I dont even look at the way the typed leeters has anything to do with my questions computer NERD!!!! Instead of complaining about the thread either dont reply to it or think of many other things that are worse in life instead of complaing about irrelevant issues!!!!

Re: HYBRID AMPS

Oh and yes the reason why my questions are so "Robotic" is because yes I am a Cyborg and you were chosen for annoyance. We had strick orders to come to this planet and get on the SD forum and type in ALL CAPS and ask robotic questions on musical equipment and your name was in fact picked from a data base on planet Les Paul. Sorry you were chosen. Maybe better luck next time?

Re: HYBRID AMPS

I've only tried a couple different kinds but I've liked and owned some. Not sure if there was really a benefit to the tube being in there or if they were just voiced to my liking. It was neat to record direct with my randall without a dummy load.

In forum etiquette, all caps is 'shouting'.....just so you know. It can also indicate an aggressive or belligerent attitude if used deliberately.

Re: HYBRID AMPS

That's not really how I would describe hybrid amps, as a group. It's sort of a description based on a mixture of the IDEA of a tube amp with the IDEA of a SS amp, without any particular connection to reality.

As the former owner of a Kustom HV65, I have to dispute your statement. It was used primarily for practice. It had a fair clean channel and it broke up nicely. Kustom did a nice job voicing this channel. It could not duplicate the high end that the small average Fender is capable of. The distortion channel also had two main voicing's and both just seemed to lack detail, warmth, and immediacy-power of the punch. This amp, I would consider dependable and well built.

After about 4 or so years, I had just got flat out tired of the amp, not that there was anything wrong with the amp, and turned it over to a local music store to sell. It did go quickly. Why did I sell it? Over the long run, it became boring. The Kustom turned one dimensional to my ears and it helped kill my inspiration to practice.

I wanted a Vox AC-15. After playing the map a bit, I realized it wasn't for. And ended up getting an Orange CR60. This is a 112 analog solid state amp and is a light year ahead of the Kustom HV65. But, it has the Orange sound and is a fun amp to use.

Saints and Sinners, a Peavey Bandit 112 will be a better buy than the Kustom.

Edit: Here are a couple of videos demoing this amp. Listen to the cleans. Compare then with your standard amp for clean sounds. What is the difference? On both videos the gain sound are very similar. I am intentionally avoiding any descriptive wording. Draw your own opinions.

Definitely not. Nothing beats a tube amp for warmth and touch responsiveness. I just mean that some hybrids are good amps that have a good sound (for what they are), and some suck.

I was sooo shortsighted ( duh, as usual). I didn't realize that some guys into to modern metal dig that sound of hybrid or Solid State..like Dime!!. I'm a fogey, and I associate tone with that old vintage tube sound, and to me that old sound is the one true tone, but other guys might think that the "sound" , not "tone", of the solid state or hybrid stuff works best for them..

Re: HYBRID AMPS

I had a Vox Valvetronix many years ago when they first came out. Pretty good. But got bored with it quickly.

Re: HYBRID AMPS

I have a Peavey bandit 112 also "Silver Strip" and I like them both. You are talking about an older Kustom amp. The one I purchased is a new series for 2014 PH series. I have the PH TUBE 12 from what you said they must of improved the sound because the one I got (PH) sounds really good clean and dirty.

Re: HYBRID AMPS

Those videos are irrelevant Im not talking about the 12A totally different amp my friend. This is the PH Tube 12 its way better than the 12A there is nothing even on youtube yet about them they are very new.
