Hybrid pickup question

Hi! I'm living in a tone dilemma between the Seymour Duncan Screamin' Demon and the Seymour Duncan PATB-3 Blues Saraceno for the bridge position.

I was wondering what do you guys would think of a hybrid between the two. I think it would look kind of crazy and since I don't know what usually happens when you make a hybrid of two pickups as far as tone goes... then I'mcurious about it. I would like it to have the growlyness, the top end and the clarity of the Screamin' Demon, but with the slightly tightness, the honky sound, the picking attack and increased sustain of the PATB-3.

Do you guys think the hybrid will get me something close to that? or am I just dreaming of the impossble (unless I talk to the Seymour Duncan custom shop and get something specifically made for my requirements and the type of guitar it would be installed in.

I wanted to experiment with pickups anyway, so I tought it would be a good idea... although I don't know if the PATB-3 will allow opening it, since it has the Parallel Axis poles on it...

That's how ugly it would be (A bonafide contender to the fuglybucker) I couldn't align the poles since the two pictures are different (and I cheated and used a Full Shred picture since the Demon picture it's so differently aligned)

Yeah It's not really ugly, just difficult to stare at. But tone it's what matters here isn't it?

What do you guys think?

Re: Hybrid pickup question

Sounds like a great idea. I have to say that I am really in love with my neck Fugly Bucker. I picture in my mind that the Demon/Saraceno hybrid would sound similar, but definitely an interesting hybrid to try and see. I'm sure the result would sound great no matter.

Making a hybrid is really very easy if you are careful and patient. Don't try to hurry and muscle your way through the project. There is at least one very excellent thread on here explaining in detail the entire process. It was my "textbook" for my first hybrid.

Please do it and report back on your results...possibly with another one of your great vids demoing it.

Re: Hybrid pickup question

I'm gonna have to search for some threads of people that have already done hybrids, so I can see what the process looks like.

it used to be a sticky for quite some time - do a search for threads started by BackToRock, as he's the guy that's behind the '59/C Hybrid to begin with. like Doc says, just take your time and don't be afraid to spend a few minutes to think through each step. make sure you have everything you need before you get started... about the only thing I wish I would've had that first time was some black pickup tape to give it a fresh wrap when I was done - but that's just me.

be sure to check that thread (and others, if needed) for commentary on the wire gauge of each coil and how they can or cannot work together.

EDIT: here is that thread on how to make it: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?22538-HOW-TO-Make-a-59-Custom-Hybrid

Re: Hybrid pickup question

I gave it a go once and I really, really need the patb3/screamin demon hybrid. I liked the initial pickups too much to keep 'm as a hybrid so I dehybridized them but man it was amazing. like a 59/Custom but with a bit more chewyness in the low and more air to it overall and much, much much more/better clarity/string separation, and less 'classic' paf-y voiced but a bit more modern. a bit. not much. amazing but so hotdamn ugly. thank god a gold trembucker cover fits the pickup (if you slightly sand off the edges of the baseplate and the bobbin of the patb coil cause thats one big momma!)

Man, the way you describe the sound makes me want to take off from work and go home so I get started right away! I'm afraid I'm gonna do like you and I'm gonna have to get me two extra pickups, so I don't end up having to take it back and undo my creation!

Re: Hybrid pickup question

I actually love the way the fuglybucker looks... so unique it's lovely. I think the Demon/PATB3 would look crazy cool.

Re: Hybrid pickup question

I made a PATB-3/Custom Hybrid a while back for a forum member... sounded absolutely excellent... I would suggest that combination!
