Didn't have any luck swapping my Custom Custom and APH1 Neck in the trade forum so I decide to try making a hybrid inspired by an old thread by BachToRock.

I was looking for a lower power bridge pickup with a less compressed tone than my JB. I was worried that the APH-1 was designed for the neck position but the lower output of the coils persuaded me to try it.

So, it is now APH-1 neck screw coil and custom custom slug coil with a2 mag and what a sweet bridge pickup it turned out to be. Reads about 11k and has a nice woody quality and is extemely balanced. It has an almost single coil character to it with nice bite but has enough output to drive the input stage while retaining a classic humbucker sound. Awesome, and I didn't have to spend any money.

The cool thing is, I can make another with the left over coils. :)

Thanks to BachToRock for the inspiration. :headbang:

Cool...I got on the Hybrid bandwagon when that all started also...I use both a PG/Custom and a 59/Custom and I still use both in 2 different guitars...I really like the Hybrid and mine are both A2 also...

Re: Hybrid Result

I've been wanting to try that for some time now. The problem is that my electrical skills are sub par at best. It's all I can do to change pups in standard wiring configuration. I'll have to hire one of you superstars when I get ready to try it.

Re: Hybrid Result

is it possible to due this like a "ghetto" way.... meaning if i have 2 humbuckers.... both 4 conductor..... and some kind of combination of only the 2 white wires, or the 2 red wires from the pickups.....effectively only using 1 coil from each pickup and combining them like this? i know obviously its not the same, cause the coils are not right next to eachother....but is there any possibility behind this notion? i dont really care, im probably wrong...just want to know?

LoL. I bet my electrical skills are no better than your own, probably worse. (Huge blister on my thumb to prove that soldering irons get very hot and should only be lifted by the handle ;]).

It was so simple to do. Remove the tape, unscrew the 2 screws from the baseplate holding the coil to remove. There are two wires joining the coils inside the pickup, black and white. It was a simple matter of disconnecting these and connecting the replacement coils wires to these.
Screw the coil onto the baseplate and replace the tape.
