Hybrid with potted and unpotted coils?

I was rewiring my Seth Lover neck pickup with 4 conductor cable and noticed that the brass screws in the bobbins were very loose (since these pickups are not potted). So I figured that I would shove a toothpick in the holes to help hold the screws in place.

I've done this before with flat toothpicks but could only find round toothpicks which filled up the holes too tightly. After reassembling the pickup I found the stud coil to be open and discovered that the brass screw had penetrated the bobbin and cut the coil wire inside. Ouch! :(

I did have an old 59 neck pickup laying around so I decided to borrow the stud coil from it. The specs on the 59 neck are very similar to the Seth Lover neck, except that the 59 uses an A5 magnet and is potted.

The SL/59 hybrid sounds great, although I didn't have a chance to hear a stock Seth Lover neck pickup in my LP 25-50 for the sake of comparison. At this point I'm thinking about a temporary swap of the 59 neck screw coil with the Seth Lover bridge screw coil, just to see the effect on things.

So question #1 is has anybody else experimented with hybrids using potted vs unpotted coils of similar windings?

And question #2 is about the procedure for returning the coil I damaged to SD for replacement... how much would it cost me and would I call customer service for a RMA?
