Hybrids in HSS Configurations

Just curious what you folks are using as hybrid pickups in HSS configurations, and with what single coils.

My guess is that the 59/Custom hybrid would lend itself well in that application.

Re: Hybrids in HSS Configurations

Going through the "Big Thread" once more I noticed one guy using the 59/Custom together with two Hot Rails in neck and middle.

Any other HSS combinations with hybrids?

So far it seems that most players (including myself at the moment) are using them in dual humbucker configurations.

Re: Hybrids in HSS Configurations

Unfortunately, there are as many choices as there are personal preferences. (Meaning...too many to list).

It's like asking..."what humbuckers are you using in an HH guitar".

Re: Hybrids in HSS Configurations

Also, I don't get it. What difference does it make what anybody else is using? What tonal characteristics do YOU want out of your guitar?

Re: Hybrids in HSS Configurations

At that point I do not have any specific guitar in mind. I was mainly looking for inspiration and the experience of others what worked and in what context. I can then decide what works for me in a particular application.

And I limited the question to hybrids. That is not as broad as using humbuckers in a HH set up.

But if that is still too broad, I'll have another go:

1) Say I had a HSS guitar with two vintage type single coils and I wanted to play blues, country and classic rock with it, which hybrids would work well if I want to have a similar bite out of them and don't want the humbucker to overpower them?

2) Say I had the same HSS guitar but wanted to use a higher output bridge pickup to play 80s hard rock, which hybrid humbucker and which single coils would keep up with a higher output humbucker?

Humcancelling single coils preferred.

Re: Hybrids in HSS Configurations

I like JB's for HSS Strats. Versatile. Gets the job done. Pearly Gates seem to balance very well, and get that bluesy/country/classic rock sound.

Any HSS strat I've worked with had either the stock Fender, or GFS single coils.

Re: Hybrids in HSS Configurations

it depends on the output of the single coils. If the singles are very vintage voiced, like the SSL1, I'd go with the PG/Custom hybrid. If they're hotter, like the SSL5, I'd go with the demon/SH7 Alnico8 hybrid. If they're REALLY. REALLY. REALLYYYYY hot, like the SSL3 or SSL7, I'd go with the Fullshred/Alt8 hybrid.

Just my three cents :)

Re: Hybrids in HSS Configurations

Was just going to ask - if my memory serves me right, the SH-7 Seymourizer turned into the SH-6n.

Many thanks for your input, it's really appreciated.

Re: Hybrids in HSS Configurations

yes, that's totally correct. But I hate the term SH6N. feels to me as if a perfectly great, good, amazing pickup was degraded to a neck position and doesn't get the love it deserves. So, as stubborn as I am, it's SH7 from now on for me ;)

Quarter Pounds for the singles. Just to be safe. Then:
Pearly Gates,
JB
Or maybe a hybrid thereof for the bridge.

Re: Hybrids in HSS Configurations

Orpheo, we love ya...keep using SH-7 if you like (I certainly understand your reasons).
