I Am In LOVE......

I just spent the past hour with this beauty locked inside the small acoustic sound room at Guitar Center. I am just blown away by this guitar. I am SO glad that I didn't pull the trigger on that Ovation Anniversary, or one of the Dean Acoustics I've been looking at.

The tone of the 314 is bright, but not thin. Rich, but not bassy. Full, but not midrangey. Very complex. It was strung with Elixer's. I tried all of the Taylor range, from the $2600 models all the way down to the budget models....nothing came close. I also tried the nicest Martins on the wall, as well as Washburns, Takamine's, top end Ovations.....nothing compared. The Takamine's were nice, but the highs seems to thin, and the bass too boomy. The Martins were also nice, but I didn't like the feel of the necks, and the tone was slightly too dark for me, not alive enough if you will. The Martins didn't seem to "project" the tone for me in the same way as the 314. Each note within the chord on the 314 seems to ring out with it's own complexities, while not diminishing the whole.

It's all personal taste, but for me the Taylor hit the home run. Now I'm not the most gifted acoustic player, not even close, but I tend to judge acoustics on the tone's of some of my favorite tunes. Tequilla Sunrise, the intro to Love Song by Tesla, More Than Words and Hole Hearted by Extreme, and an old acoustic version of Willin that I heard many years ago, and don't know by whom...I don't believe it was Little Feat, but I could be wrong.

Anyhow, when playing acoustics, I generally find that one model will sound good for certain songs, but not quite right for others. The Taylor spoke to me on each and every song. It also played as effortlessly as any acoustic I've ever played. I didn't feel like I had to fight it one bit.

This is my next purchase. I've been talking about a custom Heritage order, wanting a Gibson LP, a Tele...all kinds of things. I've realized that I'm depriving myself musically by not having a great acoustic. $1500 will be as much as I have ever spent on any guitar, electric or acoustic....but it will be well worth it. All other GAS related items are on hold until I own the Taylor 314.

Re: I Am In LOVE......

Nice! i own a Taylor 614CE, and it is the best sounding and playing acoustic i have ever played by far. Taylor's are great. You'll love it.

Re: I Am In LOVE......

Sometimes I think the same.

I spend pretty much all of my money on electric guitars.. when i mostly play my acoustic

I've never played a really high line acoustic like that before, stuff like taylors and martins usually have "ask to playtest" written on them so I leave them alone :(

Re: I Am In LOVE......

Jeff,
when I go to GC, or my favorite store, Buffalo Brothers, I usually play a 714CE if they have one, and that would probably be my pick for my next acoustic

BTW, Buffalo Bros price on the 714 beats GCs by a few hundred dollars ;)

Re: I Am In LOVE......

Jeff,

Before you pull the trigger on this one try the 414CE or even the 514CE and I'll think you'll like them better - also see if you can hook them up to a decent acoustic amp and then see whether or not you really like them. When I play acoustics aside from all the usual Eagles, Clapton and other stuff that I may just want to do I also go into altered tunings -DADGAG, or DGDF#BD and play some fancy stuff - that way I know whether or not the guitar is worth while. You might just also want to try some Lowdens if you can get any!

Last night I was blown away by an unusual suspect ... a Seagull ... Amazing Action and tone ... crazy

Re: I Am In LOVE......

Taylors have such great necks and such great tone, that they're probably the only acoustic I like outside of Martin....and some boutiques like Collings, Santa Cruz, Goodall, and Lowden. Also, when trying them in stores, you have to consider that the strings are often 'played out' and the only way to truly hear a good acoustic is with newer strings. I find this to be the case with Martins....They have such a rich bass that the strings have got to be fresh to display their true tone.
Acoustic properties of wood and construction are so much more noticeable in acoustics than electrics, so you definitely get what you pay for with acoustics. Acoustic shopping is NOT the place to pinch pennies.....break the bank, just once, and you'll be much happier in the long run. Most people don't need a bunch of acoustic, so make your one purchase a good one.

Taylors are great. I have a 910 dreadnought and it's PERFECT in every way. It feels great and sounds even better. :)

Curly....do you happen to remember what the price was? No one on the web can display pic's of Taylors or prices....something that usually pisses me off (well, it still does), but it will usually stop me from buying something. For God's sake, if you want to sell it, put a damn price on it. Anyhow, I digress.

I've been reading on HC that many people have paid between $1000 and $1300 for the 314CE when GC's price is $1499. I assume this means that 10 or 11 pictures of Ben Franklin in hand will get you the guitar with the case? Anyone with experience on that?

Re: I Am In LOVE......

2-part reply:

Guitar Center:
I do know you can work GC for a better price. They also do price-matching. Show them proof of the lower price and they'll match it. I did that when I bought my $260 Fulltone Wah pedal. GC originally had it listed for $279... and they didn't even call the other place to check on the price! I know that's chump change compared to what you're ready to spend but it shows that it can be done.

Purchasing a Taylor:
I've got a 414-RCE... the R stands for Rosewood!!! If you know Taylors then you know you have to step up to the 700 series (cha-ching) before you can get your hands on Rosewood. But I was in the right place at the right time! That time seems to occur a couple of times a year. This is what's great about Bob Taylor. He's always offering "Limited series" runs but not for crazy prices.... in fact it's the same prices as the stock models!!!

Last summer I too was looking for a "nice" acoustic. I wanted something that filled the room, played effortlessly, and cost around $1000. I knew I'd probably have to buy used. I had Martin, Gibson, and Guild in mind. So I went to a local store that specialized in acoustics and I picked up a Taylor and my decision was made. It was a 614ce (the only lefty they had) and it was listed over $2000!!!! So the salesman started to educate me about Taylor. They're made so consistntly that regardless of the model number (300-900 series) they will "play" the same. And that's what I first fell in love with... the playability and the "solid" feel to the neck. So he told me that Taylor offers these limited series guitars and he can order a lefty for me that would play the same and sound better than the 614 I was playing... and by the way it was only going to cost me $1400!! That's $400 more than I wanted to spend but if you buy a stock 714ce your spending over a grand more!!! I easily justified the extra $400 for a custom-built guitar just for me!!!

BOB TAYLOR ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

So my advice to you is to find a shop that knows Taylor well (they list all dealers on the website) and scope the place out. Ask if they have any limiteds or if there will be any available soon. I had to wait 2 agonizing months but it was obviously worth it. Then pounce on it!

Good Luck!!!

Re: I Am In LOVE......

^ Great reply....Thanks. I'm going to search out some Taylor dealers other than Guitar Center right now. Good to know about the playability factor on different models. I really think I want the Grand Auditorium Cutaway, but will do some more searching.

BTW, anyone know the real difference between the 312 CE and the 314CE? The 312's go on ebay for a few hundred cheaper.

Re: I Am In LOVE......

Yeah, I'm In Love Too....every Time You Post!!!! :)

Shake That Thang, Girl!!!!!!!!!!! :32:

Re: I Am In LOVE......

im in love with the dreadnought 314......and i mean, in f*cking love. best acoustic i have ever ehard, better than any martin of any time period.

too bad i dont have $900,

Re: I Am In LOVE......

Great review Jeff. Its interesting that it has Elixir strings on it. I've heard mixed reviews of Elixirs. People seem to have a love/hate relationship with them. Its even more interesting when taken with what GearJoneser said, about the Martins needing new-ish strings. The whole point of the Elixirs is that the poly coating prevents finger oils and such from deadening the strings.
I wonder how much one had to do with the other.

Also, as far as Taylor not allowing prices to be posted. This used to annoy me too, until I worked in retail, and realized they do this to protect their dealers - which is a good thing. They don't want someone to blatantly "use" a dealers "room" and equipment to go audition the product, then go buy it online, or such. It actually, shows they care about their dealers - even the likes of GC. ;)

Re: I Am In LOVE......

Jeff...welcome to the Taylor Love Club!!!! LOL!!! (i gotta have one...one day!)

one thing to consider with taylors...is while they all have that "taylor sound/playability" they offer a TON of wood differences from model series to model series, which affect the tone as well...

www.taylorguitars.com

click on all the series and then the woods icon to get the differences in tops/sides/backs...and then play em all...!!!

I love TAYLORS!!!

Re: I Am In LOVE......

I have a Taylor 814-C equiped with a Jim Kaufman Sunrise soundhole pickup. It's my stage guitar and I really love it. Taylors are among the nicest sounding and easiest playing acoustic guitars (and the best value, IMO) on the market.

I traded in a sweet Lowden for my Taylor.

I had a Leo Kotke 12 String by Taylor too...best 12 string I've ever owned. But I got tired of the 12 string thing...so I sold it and bought a Martin 000-28HD.

I still lust for a Collings version of the Martin OOO-28HD, but I have the Martin version and that's my favorite small bodied acoustic...it never leaves the house.
