i was polishing my guitar today, when i found out that something was funny.

the polish, instead of making the guitar shiny, made the part very DULL.

turns out, it was my dad's UNLABELED car polish.. :yell:

i've read that car products are coarse, so they shouldn't be used on guitars..

but god, that label :yell: if it had a label..

i can't get the stuff off with a damp cloth.

i've tried my REAL polish..no luck. :yell:

anyone have any tips??

thanks,
benji

Yeah. Don't use unlabelled chemicals on your guitar.:) Is it poly or nitro?

poly

I sometimes use McGuires automotive glazing and swirl remover to remove scratches from guitars but obviously you found something funky to rub on your guitar.

Try Naptha, it's easily found as Rosinol lighter fluid. Just don't smoke or use it near open flame or you'll relive the Jimmy Hendrix Experience.

After you get the goo off, find a good non-wax GUITAR polish to clean your guitars. I'm partial to Smiths Pro Formula Polish but there are a few good products out there.

Let's say that you finally can't remove the spot... Then you can consider repainting the guitar. I would think about this only If you guitar it is a bolt on neck. Then you can remove the neck, all the electronics, pickguard and the bridge so the guitar body becames a painted piece of wood that it "pretty easy" sandable. Then you can remove all the paint from the body and get it repainted.

Probabely your local repairman could do this with no problem and I don't think that could harm the body at all.

listne to robert about the lighter fluid and don't use that stuff again.

I have had great luck with Meguiar's Scratch X for situations like yours. Give it a shot, but READ the directions and do a little area at a time. A fair amount of "elbow grease" and you might be able to undo what the other cleaner caused. Good Luck!!!

BTW, Scratch X can be found at auto parts stores, it is gentle but very effective.

i was pretty sure it wouldn't, it sounds like you just scratched the hell out of your guitar, get a buffer, and get buffin

edit: now that i read it again, it seems like the polish might have wax or something in it...

Re: i am the dumbest living thing on earth..LABEL YOUR THINGS PART 2

Stop everything, buy some Turtle wax, and use that Turtlewax sponge to buff the living crap outta your guitar, or ......hate to say it, but you f@#$cked up your guitar.
