I don't care what Fender is paying him

Clapton needs to get a Gibson or at least put Hummbuckers on his guitar. I have the crossroads DVD and just bought the reunion CD and the Fender single coil tone just ain't it with his style! Stevie or Jimmie Vaughn, Hendrix, Buddy Guy, John Maynard (SP), sound gret on Fenders But not Clapton.

What are you smoking? His tone on the Crossroads DVD is AMAZING. period.

Check out Fresh Cream or Disreali Gears, blows his latest stuff away IMO.

His early stuff is miles ahead of his more recent work IMO. But that aside, I think people are discussing his tone and not his playing/writing.

No I just don't like the tone on the last few DVD/CD's I've bought and I think it's the single coils?

Re: I don't care what Fender is paying him

I miss his humbucker tone actually. Though I didn't think his Crossroads DVD tone was all that bad.

Re: I don't care what Fender is paying him

Well, I know what you guys mean, but I think his tone on the DVD is great...and so is his humbucker tone, maybe he should switch guitars for what song/ era of songs he's playing? ex. strat for layla but LP for Sunshine...

Re: I don't care what Fender is paying him

I think Clapton still rocks on a Strat, but he should have dug out his Les Paul for the Cream reunion.

Re: I don't care what Fender is paying him

i am a big fan of strats but contrary to most people i think clapton's tone with strats sucks..............eeeeeeeeeeeeeeer..............is not very good...................

Re: I don't care what Fender is paying him

I like his strat tones. In his later age you can tell he has lost some of his ability to hear higher frequency, so he seems to bump those up which I don't like as much.

While I agree humbuckers are part of that Cream tone, I wouldn't want that on his other stuff, I think the cream sound is a little loose and he wouldn't cut through nicely.

Re: I don't care what Fender is paying him

I like his bucker tone waaaay more...his strat tone isnt one of may favorites at all. I just loved that aggresive sound he had back in the day.

Re: I don't care what Fender is paying him

Personally, I like both Claptons Bluesbreaker/Cream tone and his Derek and the Dominos tone just about evenly. The humbucker tone was great, but I think the early single coil tone was better. Personally, I think he would be able to get most of the sounds from the Bluesbreakers through to his tone now if he had a strat with a humbucker in it, either at the bridge or the neck. That way he could achieve the "woman tone" of Cream, the overdriven-Strat sound of Derek and the Dominos, the bluesy-overdrive of the Bluesbreakers, and even his current tone, with one axe!

Re: I don't care what Fender is paying him

I totally agree. I'm a Clapton/Cream fan from the '60's, and by far, that is his best tone (SG or LP through a Marshall). I'm going to see Cream next week at MSG, and I sure wish he would mix it up a bit and at least use a Les Paul for a few of the songs. His Strat tone is ok, but it gets Uber boring after a while.

I liked his tone way back when he had his ES-335 with PAFs... now that was tone.

He uses Fender Lace Sensors on his Strat. Never played any, but perhaps
that's the key !? Just an idea.

Sometimes i like his bluesy overdriven StratSound - but mainly if BB King
is playing with him - eg riding with the king album
