I Dont Understand?????

I agree. I have felt like there has been a huge lack of intelligent, main-stream rock, forever. There are a few exceptions, IMO, but for the most part I feel it's all the same crap rehashed. When is the last time you heard a cool song and you could dig the whole cd? Those guys in the late 60s, 70s, and early 80s, they had it going on. Maybe I'm stuck in a time trap, I dunno. But I can only think of a handful of rock bands that have consistently captured my interest in the past decade or so.

From what I have read, in the 60's and seventies bands who got signed to major record labels mostly all got to make like 3 albums. Even if the first & second album weren't successfull, they got another shot. They had time to develop their acts. Now, it's one shot and your out. And that's if your lucky enought to get that one shot.

There is alot of consolidation is radio, less variety and big big bucks behind most of the artists who make it. Your lucky if you get one song into rotation on mainstream radio. For videos there's almost no outlet, even MTV doesn't play too many these days.

I hope that with satellite radio, there will be a venue to play more of a variety of music to a wide audience. Other than that alot of bands starting out would probably make more money off selling there own CD's and T-shirts on their websites and at shows. Concentrate on developing a local following and touring and playing everywhere they can. Then if they get a big enough on their own, the record companies should come calling. Not that I'm a big Kid Rock fan, but he did it this way. I saw it on behind the music on VH-1.

Lets all get together and make a "forum pop-song" and bring in the big $$$. Surely we can all come up with something. :D

Actually... this has been done on another forum I go to. Turned out exactly like something you would hear on the radio.

As for my thoughts on the subject- pop music requires two things-

Good production
Good voice.

The songs don't even have to be catchy now days! I think it's a bit misconception that anything remotely technical is virtuosity. The truth of the matter is that there are a lot of non-virtuoso bands out there with interesting arrangements, good lyrics, a high degree of emotion, and a damn catchy riff that would put much of pop to shame.

Assuming that all music be treated equal however, I would say that most listeners are lazy. They go to what sounds memorable(usuallly means repetitive arrangement) rather then whats good. I mean, think of it this way- Louie armstrong was an AMAZING trumpet player and singer, but he gets recognised for a song that was simple, and slightly catchy.

Re: I Dont Understand?????

i think that the ultimate medium is someone like Hendrix, Zeppelin, or the Beatles. all of those guys could create legendary, complicated, groundbreaking music, and at the same time, keep the attention of all people (rather than just musicians). the stuff Hendrix had up his sleeve was considered genious to musicians, but to the non musician, it was just flat out good sh*t. The Beatles came out with revolutionary stuff, including things never tried on guitar before, but it was good music that everyone can enjoy. the trick is to find something revolutionary that has never been done before, and then put it into a song that people will like. thats what makes the greats. unfortunatly, there havnt been very many of those in a while.

the key is in bands that find a balance, the ones that write great songs, but have equally as great musicianship, and have experimented a bit.
That's where Maiden comes in :)

one-note solos are the best.

-X

Last Saturday night at my gig, I was to play the solo for a power ballad-style song, and had a fever (literally 101.3*) that stole my inspiration. So I played what I felt...... Using my L'il Gator volume pedal, I simply played swells comprising of octaves concurring with the chord changes. For the turnaround as it gets a little more hard driving, I used the wah and rapidly strummed a simple progression leading to the head. Those drunkards still hollered stuff like "Hell YEAH!!!" etc

Funny how that works!

That was pretty cool!! Catchy as well!!

This is why I dont understand how jam bands aren't more popular. I mean you get great songs with great displays of musicianship. I never get bored at those shows. Just when as you begin to tire of hearing Warren jamming, Derek steps in with his phenomenal sliding style.....etc,etc. Not that I personally could ever tire of hearing Warren Haynes playing!!

Eh...screw other musicians, your fans are the only ones that matter.

In my opinion.

I agree ... but play true to yourself as well. If the music coming from within is something that many people love and musicians attack for lacking talent who cares play on. If it's the reverse and the technical crowd loves you and everyone else is sleeping - don't complain you still have fans.

And if everyone hates what you play get earphones and still play.

Personally the music I write is fairly 'simple' in the minds of many guitarists ... but y'all don't phase me none

Yeah, radio music is totally under control by the big corporations, and satellite (at least for a short amount of time) looks to be the medium where people can get their music heard and listeners can hear something besides radio trash. What you said bout the many opportunities for the bands in the past makes me think of Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd, the longest staying record ever on the charts. They had several albums out before that one made it. I'm also reminded of how Led Zeppelin marketed thier albums with certain radio stations in the USA that would promote album rock and not just singles. Where's the opportunity to do that these days?

Someone said they'd rather listen to Malcom Young over Vai anyday. I'll take either over the Limpkit Evanescent-Park Staind Creed of Korn MetalliJam wannabes any day.
