I fail as a luthier!

My friend wanted me to restring his Squire Tele and so I did. The previous strings were 8s or 9s. I put on some 11s and the D string was the only that was buzzing. I'm pretty sure it was a nut problem because every time I tugged at the D string there would be a funny "DING" noise, it was very subtle. SO I tried 'fixing' the nut myself and it didn't go too well....

I got some sand paper and overdid it. Now there's a HUGE gap where the slot for the D string used to be!

What can I do? I want to see if there are other alternatives, rather than getting a new nut.

First, does it still play? If the string's in there, does it move around in the slot? If it does, that thing's done.

I think you'll want a new nut. A new nut is well worth the money in any case like this. They're like 30 bucks for a decently cut bone nut

In the future, if you need to widen a nut slot, you just need to fold some sandpaper in half and let the string sit in the crease. Move the sandpaper/string taco back and forth in the slot without using much downward pressure and check your work every 3 or 4 small movements.

$30 is a good price, i see hand cut bone nuts costing alot more than that.

OK technically the last guy who did one for me for $30 did a horrible job, but had I not sold the guitar, I could've finished it myself. the slots were the right depth and spacing, but there was wayyyy to much material left on this thing. I would've had to sand down the top of the nut and widen the slots a bit, and somehow actually seat the nut in the slot betterm as it moved around too much... eh...
on second thought,
don't trust anyone doing $30 bone nuts unless you've seen their work. $50 or $60 may seem unreasonable at first but boy is a good nut worth every penny.

If it's a 1 11/16ths, get a TusqXL. If it's a 1 5/8ths, get a Yngwie brass nut. Both kick arse, are cut perfectly and cost way less than $30.
