I finally found a low gain OD that delivers the goods.

I have been through a few low gain OD pedals in the last year....some were good, some were less than stellar. Here is a small list of the ones that I went through...

Barber LTD SR
Barber DD Low gain
Pedalworx Texas two step
Blues Pearl Blue Screamer
M.I. Audio Blues Pro
Ibanez TS 808

None of these did the low gain thing for me....some were quite good at mid-gain...especially the Blues Pro.

So, you ask what did you get that works?

Believe it or not.....a Joyo Sweet baby overdrive. I know, it is a cheap Chinese knock off of a Mad Professor pedal and is made with inferior parts....but....the tone is awesome! It is also one of the most dynamic pedals in terms of pick attack...pick light...it is clean...dig in and does its thing.

I don't have the gear to do a clip right now, so here is a youtube clip....

The best thing is that it was well under $40.00 shipped to my door. I might have to try some of their other stuff.....

I also have this pedal on my board. It's my "secret weapon" for tone. It sounds good no matter where I put the controls on my Mesa, and through my g/f's Silverface Bassman, it's heaven. One of my favorite things to do with this pedal lately has been to put a clean boost or a TS set for boost in front of it. The boosts give the pedal some extra dirt, even the clean one, and make excellent solo tones. It also preforms really well in front of an amp's natural overdrive.

I've wanted to try a Sweet Honey OD for a while now.

Re: I finally found a low gain OD that delivers the goods.

I played one at 30th St Guitars not too long ago. Was alright, but OD pedals are not my thing.

Every time I get excited over some OD pedal, I have to keep telling myself that. I stick to fuzz (mostly) for a reason - they work better for me. Still, I can be suckered into hype just as easily as anyone else.

Re: I finally found a low gain OD that delivers the goods.

In the 90's, I had an endorsement deal with Blues Pearl. I wish I still had my Blues Screamer. That was a good pedal.

I'd say to use the Joyo for awhile, and if it's a keeper get the Mad Professor, since it's the original and may sound a tiny bit better.

Re: I finally found a low gain OD that delivers the goods.

There's a store near (3.5 hours away) me that carries Mad Professor stuff. Next time I'm there, I should plug a Sweet Honey in and see how close the Sweet Baby is.

Re: I finally found a low gain OD that delivers the goods.

Personally, I'd never buy the Sweet Baby, as I have no interest in supporting people who do that kind of business.

I am married with 2 children and play gigs for money......the $150.00 I saved is money that I can spend on the wife and kids.

Meh, honestly most pedal companies do this to some degree. Look at all the Tubescreamer variants out there, or Klon clones. The pedals are quality, they sound good, and are a lot cheaper than their high priced counterparts, which for me is a huge deal as I don't have $200-$300 to spend on a pedal.

Hey, different strokes for different folks. I'm not condemning you for buying the Joyo, it's just not something I personally feel comfortable doing. Someone has to buy the originals, otherwise there would be no new pedals to clone.

Leo took his original amp designs from RCA, and Marshall from Fender just to name two huge well respected companies who copied. Unless there is an illegal patent violation, I'm OK with it.

I had never heard of the JOYO Sweet Baby until bungalowbill embeded the YouTube video. I went to YouTube and found several more demos, loved the sound, and now one is on the way fm an ebay seller for $40 delivered. Anxious to play with it.

Re: I finally found a low gain OD that delivers the goods.

I'm dying for a Suhr Riot and for a low gain OD to replace my Blues Driver which is damn good but I want something smoother.

So I'll be buying this and a Joyo US Dream this Thursday.
Wish I could buy the real things, but I'm paying both my motorcycle and an apartment so it's just not going to happen.

Re: I finally found a low gain OD that delivers the goods.

The best place I've found to get Joyo stuff (and Mooer stuff) is from pedaltrader.com. I'm not sure if they ship out of the US, but they have an excellent rent to own program, the prices are at or below other sites and ebay, and their shipping is free and ridiculously fast.

Well, it arrived this evening. Only had around 20 minutes to play with it, but it did not disappoint! Buttery smooth mild OD. Thanks bungalowbill for the tip!

Re: I finally found a low gain OD that delivers the goods.

This pedal sounds to me like a take of Mad Professor' Sweet Honey overdrive.
In that department, I like more how Wampler's Tweed '57 sounds.
As a transparent overdrive (just pushing tubes, no coloring), I prefer Wampler's Euphoria.

I really want to try the Euphoria and the Paisley (and the Ego), but until I a) find a better paying job or b) get rich and famous, I'll have to stick to $40 for a pedal instead of $200+.

Re: I finally found a low gain OD that delivers the goods.

I bought one of these too on your recommendation. It has to be one of the best bang for buck deals of all time in new guitar gear.
It sounds amazing!! The dynamics are crazy, and it's really hard to make it sound bad. The focus knob does great things to the sound too, it's not just a regular tone knob.

Just one question: Mine doesn't add almost any gain after 1 o' clock, I think it just adds a hint of compression but cranking the pot from that point doesn't do much.
Do your Sweet Baby pedals behave like this too?

Re: I finally found a low gain OD that delivers the goods.

It appears that anywhere Joyo shows up, it owns.
