God bless you, and your important work Jeff. Nothin' beats a great 4x12!!!

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

Has anyone found a 2x12 that has the same depth and tonal characteristics of a Marshall (or comparable) 4x12?

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

Suddup and play yer guitar.. and 412 :D

I agree.. love that little wall of sound.

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

Jeff, I could'nt agree with you more! I just recentley bought my first Marshall 4X12 and there is nothing else like it. The depth of tone has a "3D" quality to it that I've never heard before. Sounds so good it makes you want to play!

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

Can you PM me in some creative way to get past the censors what was starred out? I honestly don't get it :laugh2:

As for 4x12s, I'll have to wait to hear one. Maybe my dad will pick one up for his Mesa Mark 2c+.

Unfortunately, there simply isn't one out there that matches it. The closest thing you'll find to a 4x12 tone in a 2x12'' housing is the oversized 2x12s Bogner makes, for a 2x12'' they push some serious air.

4x12s are amazing. I didn't understand it until I used it in the band context. "Wait a second, I'm cutting through like nothing else, and, wow... that's my tone!" More speakers means I'm not pushing them quite as hard so it stays together at higher volumes, has better sound dispersion, thicker and punchy, punchy, punchy. God, there is nothing like a cranked halftstack (well, maybe a cranked fullstack, but my back hurts just thinking about that one).

You aren't kiddin. There's nothing that beats a 4-12 except more of them.
I love amps. I'll plug into anything, but when I want THE TONE, it's got to be a 4-12. My Bogner large 2-12 has been delegated to the lowly task of giving sound to a Vox modeling amp. My Ecstasy head laughs at the 2-12 and threatens to blow it's measly 2 speakers out! Once it's plugged up to the Bogner 4-12 Vin 30, it's at home. There's an ad in a local paper for my exact Bogner 4-12 with Greenbacks for $625. I'm using a lot of restraint in not buying it. I want it, but it's a ridiculous purchase! :laugh2:

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

Look at my "tone skeleton below" when i do a pick harmonic whamy dive I feel like WWII pilot chasing the german enemy plane and like surfer at the same time riding the bigest pipe dream ever seen by a human, its not a wall of sound its a tsunami wave of sound. I went straight from crapy crate bass 15 wat to a half stack JCM900. Never even checked out a combo in my life.

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

I might be older but I can lug my 412 like it's a rag doll :D

You can pry my 412s from my cold, dead fingers hahaha :D

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

I owned a marshall jcm 800 head and 4x12 and boy did I sure find that the 2x12 was a compromise...its like life itself

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

After 10 years of searching, I am firmly of the opinion that such a cabinet does not exist ;)

I'm really glad to read these replies. I was wondering if I was in some mental block that wasn't letting me enjoy 2x12 cabs. I've tried bunches and bunches of 2x12 cabs from Mesa to Vox to Sonic to Fender to Marshall to Rivera to No-Name etc cabs and nothing replicates a 4x12 "but with 2 speakers."

The current 2x12 I have is deeper and wider than my Marshall 4x12, but still doesn't have the sonic depth. I've gone through the stock Utahs, 2 of the Blackbacks in my Marshall, old Eminence out of a Bassman cab and now some Sound City branded Fanes. It just doesn't give it up like the 4x12. When I got the cab it had fiberglass insulation in it and the speakers were front mounted. I tore the fiberglass out and didn't like it. I tried the Blackbacks and didn't like it. I rear mounted the Utahs and didn't like it, I rear mounted the Blackbacks didn't like it and then added foam insulation- that I didn't like. I traded the Utahs for the Fanes and didn't especially like it. I took the Eminence out of my 65 Bassman 2x12 and didn't like them...

It's decent as is. But it's not a 4x12 "but smaller."

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

Yup - I've come to the conclusion as well that nothing will ever take the place of a 2x12.

When I first got my old Avatar 2x12, I was trying to convince myself that it sounded better, and did actually for a bit, using that whole "The added tightness and compression fits my tone." thing... but really, it was just me trying to trick myself into not spending any more money, to the point where I just didn't bother with it anymore, until mic'ing it up again, when I realized how small and ball-less it sounded.

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

You know if you want more bass you can stuff tons of fiberglass in it.

Re: I Forgot How Good A Solid 4x12 Sounds

It's not just a matter of cabinet volume, insulation and cabinet construction- it's the whole thing of a 4x12.

Even the best 2x12 I've played is at best anemic compared to a good 4x12.
