I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

Just to tell you something.
One year ago i bought a Evo2 / EVo combinaion and it was killer.
At least that's what i thought.
Since then i've been claiming here that the EVO2 was one of thebest DIMarzio's.

Since then i discovered the SH12 and Super V.

So lately i had a guitar on order and wanted something different,
so i ordered the EVO 2 and Evo.

Well let me tell you that: i'll never go back to ceramic pickups again.
I thought these were cool becaus ethe guitar needed a boost in the high-mids, but compared to teh Demon, they sound fizzy, harsh, and not "big" enough.

I've tried the Demon in several different guitars, it worked in all of them.
Incredible.

Toworoww i'll be ordering 1 more. Seems like no matter how good a pickup is,
the Demon is always better. It has it all: clean, classic sounding, hot, growl, clarity, heavy chords and riffs, attack.....

My 2 cents. Seems like good tone has to be Alnico, open souding and versatile. This guitar was meant to soudn different, and it does, but with the same pickups !

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

Exactly , the Demon has it all , and even more with alnico 8 magnet ! :smokin:

BTW : did you say that to Patrice Vigier ?

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

Good to hear. I'm putting a Demon in my Jackson this weekend. And hmmmm...have this spare A8 mag lying here as well...

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

Oh NNNOOOO don't do that !

I want to stay the only one ! :no1::no1::no1::smokin:

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

too late for that mate, it already was in my to-do list to get a bunch of A8 (mainly for my Duncan Distortion, my other HB is the Crazy 8 i.e. already has A8) and I did plan to give the Demon a try when I could anyway :D

You do the math:D

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

Alnico 8.... BAH. Alnico 5 is THE stuff :D And ceramic rules :) But yeah, the Demon is a cool pickup. Have been thinking of trying one out yet again for awhile now. Long time since I last played with one :)

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

Don't put an A8 in a Distortion, all you'll end up with is a little different sounding JB.

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

I did say that to patrice but he believes his choices of pickups are the right ones. I believe he should spend more time trying the new pickups from DiMarzio and Seymour.

Swaping magnet is not a good idea unless you rewire the pickup as well or try to get the cutsom 5 from a custom for example. This year we are doing new guitars, i asked larry to send us the new pickups
(D-activator X, new PAF...) and i'll be getting the Alternative 8 as well.....
I also ordered two Super V's wich is like a vintage version of the Demon to me (tight, clear and roars).

Havent tried it yet but from what i've heard at the namm @ the SD booth, the A8 looks better than most ceramic pickups. The ONLY ceramic i still like are the Custom and the Bill Lawrence L500-L. DiMarzio ceramic have no balls, i prefer the PAF's they do or the moderate output like the FRED or Air Zone. In general, they sound very cold and wet.
Unfortunaltely i'mm looking for an authetinc, organic, warm and dry sound.....
Which is pretty much what duncan has to offer.

I though it would be cool to have a different souding guitar, but it didn't work, the guitar will sound different no matter the pickups i use anyway. The right pickup for me is the Demon. I thought i had to find the righ pickup for each guitar, but now all my guitars have either the demon or the Super V. Can't find a better sound, it makes each guitar sound at its best, doesn't alterate its natural sound but has this little something that makes you wanna play over and over again.

The "tapped" coil also gives me cool bright sounds, for cleans.

I Think the Custom is a average choice for the Excalibur guitar that is an awesome piece of lutherie .
By the way Vigier put a TB-5 in bridge , fair enough , but an SH-5 in the neck position , this is a bit strange ...

As for the magnet swaping , you don't have to rewind the pickup after , the different magnet help you to fine tune the pickup to you needs .
And the alnico5 swaping in the Custom isn't the best choice ; no mids .

Don't be afraid to swap magnet , it is easy , reversible , and interesting .

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

Magnet swaping is easy, but usually a pickup is designed to work with a specific magnet and changing it will not give you a good sound.

I was refering to the cutom series, i actually did the opposite: swaped the A5 for a ceramic. It works on these, but most of the time swapping magnets will not give you the sound you're after it will just makethe pickup sound different..

Thanks for the heads up on the EVO 2-I have been wondering about that one.
Does the sound remind you of another pickup in Dimarzio or Duncan lineup?
Just wondering..

On the ceramics -to each his own-I still like some ceramics such as the seymourizer II and the custom and steves special .
I do wish there was a lower output ceramic -around 10 k -in a humbucker format.
Call me an oddball ,but I just like the pick attack of the ceramic

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

I'm familiar with alnico 2 and 5, but not with alnico 8. What magnet comes in an SD and how does swapping to an 8 change the nature of it?

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

The Demon comes with alnico 5

Alnico 8 increase the power , the low mids , and make the high string sound rounder , a bit like alnico 2 .

Alnico 8 has
*the power of ceramic without fizzy highs
*the tightness ( nearly ) , of alnico 5 but without scooped mids
* the low mids and rounded highs of alnico 2 but without flabby bass
a quite modern and intense sound .

Re: I give up on the EVO2.The Demon again.

Hey Bruno ,nice to see you again bro!
Why don't you try a PATB3 in one of the Vigier Excalibur's?
