I Got Another PRS

So I went to Guitar Center yesterday in search of a nice metal axe. I tried a bunch of six strings and even a seven, but I realized that as much as I love the range of a 7, I don't like having that extra string. Maybe I'll change my mind someday. Anyway, the guitar that stood out most to me was the only baritone I saw there - a PRS SE Mushok in cherry red. I wasn't expecting to get along great with the long scale, but it was easier than expected. But, I really wasn't a fan of the vintage cherry, and I had noticed there was a silverburst on Craigslist for a very attractive price. So I went home, debated it for a few hours, and contacted the seller. I went down to San Jose after work and picked up this guy for $320 with a case and a proper (14-70) set of strings:

Check out the awesome figuring on that fretboard, it almost looks like a nice slab of Massacar Ebony:

I like this guitar a lot. It's in practically perfect condition, and even came with a JB/59 set. I tried the JB for a few minutes but I didn't like the upper mid spike, so I took the cover off the JB and dropped in the Screamin' Demon I happened to have laying around. Much better.

I can't believe how heavy this thing gets. I'll make sure to take some better pictures tomorrow. Maybe I'll even bust the whole family out. I've got a lot of guitars these days... and that's not even counting the other one I've got coming.

And just for posterity, a few family shots (arranged in order from awesomest to still awesome but not as nice as the others):

Man, that looks killer. There's other guitars I want before hand, but I'd love to have a baritone around. Congrats on yet another killer deal!

Re: I Got Another PRS

Yeah that looks great. I played a red on recently and was super impressed, good luck with it

Re: I Got Another PRS

Nice! How are you going to tune it?

I've had a 26,5" scale Schecter for some years and I've started liking the long scale more and more I've played it. I've tuned to B with other guitars before perfectly well but the extra length really does seem to give more clarity all around.

Regarding seven strings; I've had some issues and still have with the extra string on the Sxhecter but it too becomes easier with time. It definitely has its uses.

**** you Xander, I'm trying REALLY HARD to forget that the guy responsible for this wonderful guitar was also responsible in part for "It's Been Awhile."

I like it strung in B-B a lot, and I think I'll keep it that way. I don't see myself using Drop-A very much, but it's nice to know that I could do that. I just think B has the right balance of being able to get nice full, deep cleans and still be heavy as hell. I might even drop in a 5 way for more versatility.

The scale will definitely take a bit to get used to. The last time I played a baritone was a few years ago, and that was a Taylor 8 string acoustic - not really a fair comparison. But I like that it's 27.7 instead of something shorter, it really seems to give the guitar a beautiful fullness while also being bright enough to cut through what could be a mudfest. The extra long scale also keeps things really stiff feeling (in a good way) despite the tuning. Though part of that may be the heavy as hell strings. I restrung it with the boomers the previous owner gave me and they're not bad, but the G isn't wound and I liked that about the one I played yesterday. So I ordered a few sets of D'addario baritone strings, and I'll see how that changes things later this week.

Re: I Got Another PRS

I have wanted a baritone for about 20 years , not a PRS fan at all but that looks like it would work just fine. Nice score , congrats.

Re: I Got Another PRS

Didn't that same dude have a cool Ibanez sig too?
Apparently. I think the PRS looks cooler though. I've always been a big silverburst fan but this is my first guitar in said finish. I dig it a lot. It's also my first set neck (and hardtail) in almost four years. It's different, that's for sure.

Re: I Got Another PRS

Staind was bretty gud. They were consistently better than the d-bag labelmates Limp Biskit and Dope, that's for sure. I'm glad they wandered off and did a wussified metal/emo thing and broke free of that ugly haircut anchor they were chained to.

I'm a big fan of standard B and drop A in any musical genre, and they managed to change to something other than metal.

Re: I Got Another PRS

+1

My guitar collection has (including the guitar I don't have yet) tripled this year because I started getting full time hours at work instead of just 9 a week. The key to finding these deals is actually being able to take advantage of them.
