I guess it's time for an update

Well, it's been almost a year since I picked this guitar up, and I've finally got it done.

For those who don't remember, I picked this up at a flea market for $25 because some poor soul didn't know how to put it back together.

Well, since I'm not a fan of black guitars with rosewood fingerboards (heck, I'm not much of a fan of rosewood fingerboards, but it's kinda hard to swap those) I sanded it down, routed out the neck pickup for a bucker and repainted it. I picked up some Phat Cats and some new white accoutrements from martinsixstringcustoms (thanks again, bro!) and a new pickguard from Warmoth.

Here's the finished project:

I've done some work on a few of my others, too.

I picked up a trio of matching Peavey Predators a while back. I just cleaned up the first one and sanded the finish off the neck. Otherwise it's completely stock. The other one got my HSS setup from my old Predator (more on that later) and is now loaded with a Custom Custom (with coil splitter)/Hot Rails/Cool Rails. I did a true-oil finish on that neck. The third one is still disassembled, as it needed some repairs. It will be getting a new paint job.

As for my old Predator, I got a new HH pickguard to house my 78 and the 59n from my Jackson. Before I installed it, I put an A2 in the 59. I don't know that there's an HH combo I like better.

Hey how you likin those Phat Cats in that Strat? I'm thinkin of swapping the CustomCustom in my Fender with Phat Cat in my SG-X, so how would you say a Phat Cat compares to a CC?

Re: I guess it's time for an update

How did you paint the body on the Fender?

Looks sweet, by the way!

Man, I am really diggin' the Phat Cats so far. They are just about perfect for that late 70's classic rock tone, but with a little tweaking of the tone controls you can get a fair imitation of that glassy, strat tone. It's been able to handle all the distortion I've thrown at it so far without getting too muddy, but it really seems to love that moderately overdriven range.

I'm definitely glad I got them.

how would you say the EQ is, compared to the CC? More open, more lows, that sorta thing?

i mean i'll know myself in a couple days but...haha

I just roughed up the paint with some 400 grit (IIRC) sandpaper, and then shot it with a few coats of white Krylon. After letting it cure for about a week, I taped off the stripes with some 3M masking tape and shot it with some blue Krylon. I only got about 4 or 5 thin coats of blue on there and it got that marbley look that you can kind of see in the pictures. I had intended to get a solid, even coat of blue on it, but it just looked too cool. After that, I sprayed a few coats of clear on it and hung it up for about a month. Then I wet-sanded up to 2000 grit and polished with some 3M Perfect-It and a lot of elbow grease.

Well, it's a little fatter in the bottom end, but there's a little more clarity in the highs. It's still an A2, so there's a family resemblance, so to speak.
