I dont know whats happening, but for the past 6 months ive gone through too many packs of fender heavy picks. Not that i lose them, but i've started playing a whole lot more and the picks keep wearing out. Whats a good tortoise shell style pick like the fender heavies that doesnt wear out?

and a stupid question-do they make/used to make those picks out of tortoise shells?

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

I use Dunlop Tortex and they never wear out. Never. They're not tortoise style though.

I used to use Fender picks. I could wear one out in one sitting. The only time I ever pull a new Tortex pick out of the pack is when I lose one.

Yes, they used to be made out of tortoise shells.

Dunlop Jazz II. Size improved my picking speed and dexterity a ton as soon as I got used to not having so much extra pick to haul around. Never broken or wore one down, either.

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

im not really that big on picking speed though, im a classic rock/slowhand style player. Thanks for the pointer though. Maybe ill grab one at guitar center sometime and see how it goes.

for now im gonna stock up on Ultexes-thanks texasguitarslinger for the advice.

Are you looking for something different 'cause you're spending more than you'd like on picks or are you just irritated that your picks don't last as long as you'd like?

Buy one of these. I'm going to give one a spin, just for the hell of it. I'd guess it would take a long time to wear one of these down.

I've got two of those Mojo picks (both minted in 1954 the year SRV was born) and I just keep them in my guitar cases for good luck. As far as playability, they make your tone super bright not to mention they are hell on any exposed part of your guitar. They will just eat the finish right off. I think they make great gifts for a guitar player but not as a functional pick. :22:

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

the tortoise shell style fender heavies are nice playability wise, but i hate having to switch picks 3 times in one practice just because they chalk up when i do palm mutes and wear away instantly.

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

I've been using Tortexes and they never wear out. Not to mention they are much more grippy than the Fenders. Lots of people say that once the film of non-slip stuff wears off the pick after an hour that they're no longer grippy. This is untrue, because I have ran one under water and washed it off (bloody nose + picks = bad), it's still grippy as hell. I've been trying the Jazz IIIs (nylon) and they're pretty slippery, I have to get myself some of those dark Jazz picks.

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

I dont know ive worn out alot of my dunlop tortex picks, but i use a lighter thickness of picks, which are .60's the ornage ones. They play amazing but they do wera out on me, but that may be due to my heavy strumming hand and not really soloing on individual strings.

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

I use .73 ,.88 and 1.0 tortex picks. I still have some left from many years ago, and while they do wear down it takes a very long time for them to do so.

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

In my experience, nylon picks have the best wear. I've also tried celluloid, tortex, ultex, and delrin, too. Delrin wears out the fastest, and ultex leaves white powdery stuff on your guitar from it shredding. I play in ska and hardcore bands, so I do lots of strumming.

IMO I would say to just use the pick that has the best feel to you, and buy a lot of them so that you don't have to worry about wearing them out. I usually buy them by the 1/2 gross (72), and that lasts a pretty long time. I only wish they sold ultex in those quantities.

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

I use medium Dunlops. The Orange ones I forget the gauge. The Fenders always wore out on me too, I think they suck.

Fender Picks :rocket:

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

i go through a Fender pick in a matter of hours. once the tip's gone, i take the lighter to them and watch them BURN  haha

www.surfpick.com these picks are impossible to wear down

Hi all,

I found this thread while looking at my 'tracker'.
I make the Surfpicks.

Jimi ... I also cannot wear down the Lignum Vitae picks..
but some people are able to do so.
I think it has something to do with the angle of attack?
If a person tends to wear out ordinary picks..
they'll probably be able to wear out mine.

Things like string grinding, of course, will wear the pick.
A wound guitar string is like a file, when something
is moved against it vertically.. and although Lignum Vitae
is the world's strongest wood.. it is still wood.

best regards,
Ra

Re: I hate it when picks wear out!!!!!

The thing I hate about Fender picks is that they wear away in one sitting and FORGET about doing pick slides... you'll have nothing but a coating of dust on your pickups and a handful of neon sand if you do.

Dunlop Tortex picks are the standard. I love 'em and they never wear out. Dunlop Ultex picks are pretty much ndestructible as well. I also like Gator Grips (textured tortexes with more rounded edges) and Jazz III stiffos (black material that super duper stiff and hard).
