I just bought a used hamer guitar...

http://hamerguitars.com/?fa=detail&mid=400 (It's an older model, because the pickups are covered, not like in the picture)

...and the pickups say they are Duncan designed. I was wondering if any could tell me what pickups are most like the ones installed in the guitar. The bridge pickup is pretty hot, sounds a little too trebly on clean, but excelent with gain. I can also easily get pinch harmonics no matter where I strum. The neck pickup is muddy with full volume, but turn down the volume to 7 with high gain and it starts sounding very bluesy. Also, the pickup sounds beautiful on clean with full volume. I was wondering what pickups are most like these, I don't care if they are Seymour Duncans, Dimarzios etc. I'm sorry I can't post any sounds clips, because Guitar Center always has the police hold.

If this is suppose to go in the pickup section, please tell me.

Re: I just bought a used hamer guitar...

Older U.S. Hamers have real Seymour Duncans (59s) or DiMarzio PAFs.

There should be a sticker on the back of the pickups with a model number on it like "HB101n" or HB103b". These numbers can be looked up on the main website in the section detailing the Duncan Designed line. There are sets based on the Distortion set, the JB/Jazz set, the '59 set, and others.

I know the guitar is not a U.S. made, its one of the XT series made in korea (or some other country). The salesman said that the guitar was a late 90's early 00's model, but he wasn't sure. Also, the pickups say Duncan Designed on them, so they can't be Seymour Duncans or DiMarzios.

Thanks

So I guess I'll have to wait to get the guitar to be sure what pickups they are bassed off of.

Re: I just bought a used hamer guitar...

Does it say Hamer with Slammer Series under the name? Those are the Earlier version from Korea and those tend to be real decent guitars. They are Seymour Duncan Designed.

Re: I just bought a used hamer guitar...

These things are pretty good - I played an older one (2001-02 model) once that came in kind of see through orange finish (no flame maple veneer). The only problem was the guy who owned it strung it with 13s, tuned it to B (thus messing up the intonation) and insalled an EMG in the bridge, so I didn't care much for the sound but with the right pickups and setup I perceived it would be a nice guitar.

Originally it came with Duncan Designed HB103s (uncovered), which are based off the Distortion. Now, the HB102 set is modelled on the Jazz/JB combination, and the HB101 set is modelled on 59s - I think, correct me if I'm wrong, someone. From the description of the sound, I'd guess you've got the 103 set. In any case, there's bound to be a label under the pups to say what they are.

I'm pretty sure the head just said hamer, nothing about Slammer series under it, but i dont remember what it said on the truss rod cover.

Sucks that the guy who owned it ruined it, its a really beautiful guitar. My guitar is cherry sunburst with a flame maple top, so the guitar you played was probably a different model.

The desciption of the 103 sounds like the pickups that are installed on the guitar, but I can't be 100% sure until i get the guitar and take of the pickups.

Re: I just bought a used hamer guitar...

I think the Hamer was just a Standard (i.e. not a Standard Custom), but it has pretty much the same specs as the flametop model - alder body, maple neck, HB103s. The finish was called Aztec Gold but it looks more like this USA one :32:.
