I just opened up my Triaxis

I lost signal on my B channel send for no apparent reason. I did the typical jack/plug wiggle thing and thought I caugth a bit of signal so I am fairly sure the probem isn't terminal.

I pulled the Triaxis out of the rack and wired it direct to my 2:90. I shut down all the power and pulled the top cover.......

Oh my goodness, there is a lot of stuff in there., Boards on top of boards, ribbon strips going all over the place and a butt load of chips. I have never seen such a huge collection of parts in all my years of amp "fixin". Grant it, I am not an amp tech by any means but I can normally find an obvious problem if I look hard enough.

Good thing Lastwinj is on his way over. There's way too much stuff in there for me to even guess about it. The secondary problem is that the closest Mesa service center is now an hour away and is called "Als' Diner". That name just doesn't inspire me to drop off a $1600 preamp.

Pray to the amp Gods for me...................

Re: I just opened up my Triaxis

yikes!! i hate working on pc board stuff, especially the ones that have a few boards crammed into a tiny space. good luck at al's :)

Re: I just opened up my Triaxis

Ain't going to Als, Lastwinj already has it figured out. It's an open plate load resistor. I should have it back by thursday.

Good thing I own 5 amps..........

Re: I just opened up my Triaxis

At the Mesa Hollywood store, they have a triaxis with a clear plastic plate over it, so you can see the inside. Like you, I was amazed at how much circuitry is packed into that thing. It must be a nightmare to diagnose, especially if the problem is buried in the spaghetti. I'd have a hard time remembering where the 200 tiny bolts go back to.

Re: I just opened up my Triaxis

Most of it is the switching and numeric controls, the actual singal boards are only about 1/4 of the darn thing.

It's still a lot of stuff.

Re: I just opened up my Triaxis

should be good fun. i do like the guts. pics will definitely be taken.

May your tone be left intact, bro. May your baby return as good as new.

Re: I just opened up my Triaxis

Well my boy Lastwinj knows his stuff and while I was hesitant to call him in on this one he layed my fears to rest. We called Mesa and got a confirmation on the probable issue which he had already diagnosed on a guess (experience) and after a little board pulling and digging he confirmed the problem. I have no doubt that it'll be back next week in tip-top shape and he's even ordering a couple of spare parts in case there are future issues.

He's a great guy and a great friend as well as one heck of an amp tech. He builds some killer amps as well and any of you would be well served to deal with him.

Word.

Re: I just opened up my Triaxis

the guts of the matter.

in the 1st pic, you will see a red circle. the resistor inside that, is the one i have to replace (well, already have...). quite a nifty operation.

and all is better. output problem fixed.

any chance you guys could figure out how to mod ld2 yellow closer to C+ specs like Petrucci's triaxis? :D

Re: I just opened up my Triaxis

Don't include me in "you guys", because Jeremy fixes them. I just play them.

Re: I just opened up my Triaxis

Back in the house, back in the rack and back in tip top shape.

Anyone that can tech out a Triaxis has my respect and Lastwinj gets two scoops from me after working my Marshall, my 2:90 and now that huge bucket of parts Mesa calls a Triaxis.

Thanks again Bro, she's breathing serious fire once again!

Re: I just opened up my Triaxis

Glad it was something simple Robert. It's scary when your main rig goes down...especially when it's a complicated beast. Having a friend like Germ is a blessing for sure.

Now, can someone build me an amp that makes "MY" playing sound good? :6: :chairfall

Like James Hetfield or John Petrucci heavy crunch and liquid leads :) Dream Theater's 6DOIT or Metallica's "black album." Petrucci's tech, Mark Snyder, actually modded a Triaxis for him which made ld2 yellow (the C+ mode) a lot closer to actualy C+ specs/tone but no one else says they can do it and Snyder is too busy with his winery to be bothered :p

i dont see why it would be so hard. from looking in this thing, not much "modding" can be done. just value changes and such. those are easy to implement. now, making those changes sound good, that is another story.
