I just played a '58 goldtop

Good God is it cool. It had the wear, the smell and a huge amount of vibe. The Bridge pup was a great mellow treble sound, and the neck pup was just buttery smooth- a bit hotter then the bridge, but I wasn't about to start adjusting things. It was brought in to our store by a collector here in town. The neck played great- a lot like my PRS wide fat- nit huge but a nice chunk of wood. I don't think the prs necks are really that big anyways. The pups were both hotter then I expected. The output jack plate was a real flimsy peice of plastic- I kinda got worried when I went to unplug it. Just a real cool experience. I was only able to spend about 10 minutes on it, but I don't know when I'll ever get to play one again. i hope he buys a '59:fingersx: He also brought in a '64 (I think) strat last week. That was also really cool. The frets were a bit wore down, but the tone was incredible.

I know exactly what you are talking about. Most people who have never played a real "vintage" piece does not understand how incredible they can be. I work closely with a local restoration/luthier facility here and he does conversions, builds archtops and restores vintage pieces. I just played a 1960 Triple PUP Les Paul that was in for service. The vibe is just so cool.... all the wear and the tone............. you cannot describe the tone accurately. The best sounding warmest HB PUPs I have ever heard are always in a late 50's Gibson! I have had the previledge of playing several late 50's Les Pauls, L5's, 335's and a few SG Les Pauls from the early 60's. The all have the tone.

Yeah- I really dig that bridge pup. The smoothest, yet still seemed like it would cut through a mix beautifully. and I love the feel of a neck that has had the **** plated outta it.

So, you've figured out that "vintage" thing isn't just a hoity-toity imagination thing? :)

I get a kick out of people who say crap like "I played a vintage guitar, it sucked, my xxx is better than the stupid 1977 Les Paul..."
