I like old JB's.

Hey guys I'm new here. I know there is much debate on new vs. old JB's. Especially MJ wound ones. Well I don't know much, but I know I have not got on well with modern JB's in anything I have tried them in and I love old JBJ's. It could be in my head but I doubt it. I have picked up 3 JBJ's recently. The black one is in my Agile LP copy and the pink one will be going into an 80's superstrat project (probably Warmoth) soon. The green one I have no plans for yet. I also have a question. The pink one has been sitting in it's original box for lord knows how many years and the part thats under the tag is brighter than the rest of the pickup. Anybody have any ideas on how I could get that part to fade to match the rest of the bobbin? Here are some pics :)

Yeah but these didn't cost $168 each, Frank ;)
:) US street price should be around $125. I've seen JBJ's fetch upwards of $200. With the Antiquity and you know you're getting something that's been tested and custom gaussed to Seymour's specifications. I have an old JBJ that was randomly degaussed, probably from sitting in someone's "pickup drawer" next to other ceramics, etc. I brought it into work for analysis , and it wouldn't even take a full charge on the treble side. The gauss strength was very random across it's length. Better after recharging, but not uniform.

I'm just messin with ya Frank, but I didn't pay near $200 for all three of these JBJ's total.

Re: I like old JB's.

I'd buy a set of the Antiquity JB / Jazz, especially considering you don't always know what you're getting used. For $50-$60 bucks I'll take a stab at an old JBJ or CCJ or 59J or something else. If I'm going to have to pay more than that, I'll either get this set or just call MJ in the custom shop and say, "Hey MJ, wind me a pre-production JB." Just as much mojo as the old ones.

For the record, I am a fan of the older pickups and think at least some of them have better tone than newer ones. I have heard old ones that don't sound very good though..

Re: I like old JB's.

If you keep your eye out old JBJ's can be found around $50 a piece. Definately worth a shot in my book. The black one is the only one of the three I have installed and it sounds great.

Re: I like old JB's.

Kinda off-topic, but I would interested if someday "EVH Brand" did a relic of the 5150 guitar and we could finally find out if it was a JB or a 59 in that thing. I would cool if it was an old JBJ. Unfortunately Gibson owns Kramer and EVH is tied to Fender.
