I love my SG's!

I resisted forever. I think they're ugly. I like 25.5" scale length. But I wanted tones that I can't get from a Strat or Tele. Les Pauls always feel weird and uncomfortable to me. My brother's Firebird even moreso. So I tried an SG Special. Really liked the chunky neck. Bought one. Liked it so much I bought another. I play my Strat a lot less now, and that used to be my favorite. If the Strat didn't have some iconic sounds of its own I could see myself having 3 or 4 SG's and nothing else.

Re: I love my SG's!

I just got my pelham blue epi back from being borrowed and it turns out i missed it. Still need better pickups tho...

Re: I love my SG's!

Love my SG. I bought it in Spring 2010 because it was dirt cheap, and I wanted a nice playing backup guitar. These days it isn't my #1, but I do play it quite a lot. The Bigsby / Vibramate took care of the former neck-dive, and how doesn't love an SG with a vibrato? Now I just need to swap magnets in the Phat Cats since I just can't seem to get along with A2s. I don't currently have any pics, I'll take some after work tonight if the lighting is decent.

Re: I love my SG's!

I always loved the look of SGs, but every one I tried was just "meh".... I stumbled across a used custom shop SG a couple years back, and that was it. After that first one, I bought several more, but that first CS is still my favorite.

Re: I love my SG's!

I've owned 3 different SG's over the years. This 3rd one I assembled from the Precision Guitar Kits SG Jr. kit. It's one of my favorites. The SG Classic I had was down right awesome. If I could get another one, I would. I find them very comfortable to play.

I love SG's and I want one--but I'm a big fat guy and they just look like a toy guitar slung around my neck, LOL! Angus is a little runt--and he can make his sound great.

I totally get that. Im 6'2"ish and wear a 48l suit, so it makes me look like im playing a 3/4 scale.

Re: I love my SG's!

If i had more moneys, i too would have at least one more SG.

Probably something like this :

Re: I love my SG's!

Not sure if I told the stories about my 2 friends and their SGs I worked on and took to my luthier buddy? The first one is a 2002 special (some odd tag on it) ebony board crescent inlays 490 set in it 50s neck. He paid $200 more then I thought it was worth and I hated it pretty much out of the box. Did my thing to it , paint off the neck, tung oil,Babicz bridge , Planet Waves trim lok tuners , Graphtech Tusq XL nut. I shaped the neck a little extra and made it just a touch less round. Really didn't like the pups at all but after I took it to my luthier he refretted it with some fat SS and did the world class pro setup. That guitar is a smoking hot monster and I could not put it down after I picked it up , so I played it for a few days and took it back. Now I am sad. There's a 65 and a 66 2 other friends have I get to play often.

Re: I love my SG's!

Great guitars, very underrated. Don't see them nearly as often as you should. I've heard guys with Strats (that can't figure how to EQ them), that would be better served by an SG.

Re: I love my SG's!

Which is odd since its actually Gibson's best selling model.

I just don't see many guys playing SG's in blues festivals or local venues. Definitely more LP's. What genres have higher percentages of SG players?

Maybe SG's sold more units because they were cheaper than LP's, but Gibson's introduced so many low-end LP's now, I suspect they may have outpaced SG's.

I dont know about genres but if you look at gibsons sales totals they sell more SG's than LP's... Not saying its always been that way either I just know that the recent sales totals show more SG's going out the door than any other model.

Re: I love my SG's!

I started to re-evaluate the guitars in my stable once I developed carpal tunnel syndrome. Anything with a sharp radius on the body is not good for resting my forearm. I had to say "bye-bye" to my Tele because it really aggravated me. Kept the Strat. I didn't like the feel of Les Paul's to begin with, and they weren't gonna gel with my CTS either. When I got the SG it was a major surprise. So comfortable to play. At first I thought the controls were a little too tightly packed, but it wasn't long before I got used to it. Same with the pickup selector switch. What a great guitar!

A bit later than I promised, but here are some pics of my SG:

I apologize for the fingerprints, I have no idea where my guitar polish is since moving. I still need to mag swap the Phat Cats, as well as replace the nut & tuners. I don't know if Gibson bins their tuners or if I got an unlucky draw, but this set really sucks while the ones on my 335 are solid. I have a set of Gotoh locking Klusons in my parts bin, and a TUSQ XL nut should help the Bigsby stay in tune a bit better.

Re: I love my SG's!

My SGs are go-to guitars. Used quite a lot for recording rhythm tracks, and some leads. Looks aren't what matters most to me. Sound matters for sure.

Re: I love my SG's!

I've owned around 120 guitars, and my Custom Shop 2008 Diablo is in the top 5 of my favorites, and one of my main players....along with strats, LP's, and the Cornell 335.

I've tried a few pickup combos in the Diablo, and yet I return to the stock pickups....Burstbucker 1/2 set. That guitar sounds great, and the stock pickups are perfect in it.

A big part of why this guitar plays and sounds great is that LA luthier Paul Flynn installed this polished hand finished bone nut. It improved the guitar greatly.

Re: I love my SG's!

I've been really getting into SG's lately - I love the upper fret access.

Re: I love my SG's!

I have to say something about 24 fret models. On 22 fret SG's, there's a gap that's usually filled with a plastic plate. This area makes the neck joint thinner than most guitars, and on 60's neck SG's, the area allows the neck to flex. On 50's neck SG's, the situation is better, but on 24 fret
SG's, the area is filled in with the extension of the neck and fretboard, which makes for a stronger heel and a neck that doesn't flex.

So, never write off 24 fret SG's, just because you've bought into a lot of internet lore about the neck positions being off or whatever. On an SG, the added fretboard in place of the plastic plate is a good thing. With all that upper fret access, it makes it the perfect guitar for 24 frets.

+1. The neck PU's in the same position on an SG, whether it's 22 or 24 frets. That's one Gibson could have made 24 fret from the beginning. I definitely like an SG with a chunky neck that fills your hand. Seems to add more low end to the tone.
