I made a "wide range" style humbucker...sorta

I built this today. Not to wide range specs...49mm spacing and wound/constructed to sound more like a strat neck pickup instead of a humbucker. I'm loving how it sounds!

Threaded A5 rods
6.2K
2.6H

Nice.

I think the size of the mags probably helps the quite low wind to have some beef.

I have an alnico staple pickup, and fat strat is how I'd describe it - so I can imagine sort of how good yours sounds!!

How cool! I'm sure it sounds as good as it looks. Congrats on killer pup.

They are some of the ****test pictures i have ever seen on here. Come on man get some good ones up so we can see it better.

Re: I made a "wide range" style humbucker...sorta

I'm currently trying some things and taking notes...this is actually my 2nd build of it. I'm currently really liking the sound of it with the treble magnets removed from one coil and the bass magnets removed from the other coil. Once I'm happy with the build I'll make some clips!

I know...all I had was an iphone 4 the unflattering lighting in my basement. Once I've finalized tweeking the pickup I'll take more and better pictures :-)

All of the wholesale magnet suppliers I have spoken to want huge orders. Were you able to buy from them in small quantities?

Re: I made a "wide range" style humbucker...sorta

Very cool! What position have you tried it in, neck, bridge or both?

Nice work MacBradley! I'm with kramersteen, I can't wait to see better photos either.

I record some clips once I get time...hopefully this week!

They have a $40 minimum at magnetic hold. The threaded A5 rods get there quickly though, as the are MUCH more expensive than the non-threaded A5 rods they supply. You only need 6 total to do the "traditional" staggered 3+3 geometry...I'm using 12 so I could experiment with pulling magnets, adding iron poles, ect.

So far just the neck. I use neck pickups for 90% of the chords I play, so that was my priority. I tend to like under-wound or lower-wound neck pickups and over-wound bridge pickups. I'll be making a bridge specific wind soon, but it'll probably vary a fair amount. There's high iron content steel hidden in places to increase inductance in this one already...depending on the wind and magnet arrangement of the bridge, the amount of iron in the pickup with almost certainly change as well. It will definitely be a different pickup than this one, even if it looks the same!

Re: I made a "wide range" style humbucker...sorta

Update!

So far I've been liking it best with 3 magnets pulled on each side of the pickup. It avoids most of the phase cancellation and sounds much more like a single coil. Having all the magnets makes for a really cool and unique sound, however.

The 2nd prototype is on its way! This one will have a 3+3 cover so it doesn't look strange. I'm going to check some specs to find out how pulling the magnets changed that as well. I think I'm going to leave the wind really similar if not as identical as I can get it. The bridge side coil is 0.2K hotter because it is slightly closer to the bridge, but I may reduce that difference a bit.

Use the 6+6 covers and put LEDs in the empty holes. :p

Re: I made a "wide range" style humbucker...sorta

Version 2.0 and a hotter bridge alnico rod pickup should be done today! I think I'm going to call them "Full Range Humbuckers" so that they aren't too confused with Wide Range Humbuckers, since they are not the same thing, yet shared a similar architecture.

Re: I made a "wide range" style humbucker...sorta

we need sound demos asap!!! :cop:

They'll come! I have to finish my bridge pickup first and then pot the two first. Then I'll compare them to some single coils with demos.

In the meantime, here's another (low quality) photo of the latest neck model.

Re: I made a "wide range" style humbucker...sorta

I made a bridge humbucker to go in the guitar with it. No pics yet, but its got 12 rods; A5 rods on the covered neck side, and exposed and taller A4 rods on the bridge side.

The A4 coil has 600 more winds than the A5 coil, and the total resistance is 8.0K, and the inductance is 3.6H.

I'm liking the way it sounds, but I'm not much up a bridge pickup guy in general unless its in a recording. Clean I can't judge it fairly because I don't really like playing any bridge humbucker clean.
