I need a complex sound

Re: I need a complex sound

How about a paf type humbucker in the neck and p90 in the bridge or the other way around?

Re: I need a complex sound

I'll put the JB back in the list as it is very versital, but what do you mean by complex? Simply harmonics? Or are you getting at complex final tones, ie Gilmore or Holdswoth?

Something that doesn't sound like anyone else, like the way Satriani or George Lynch sound. Different.

Re: I need a complex sound

Antiquity's. I'm shure they are very complex in tone and suitable for anything just as long as you have the right stuff around it.

Then there's all kinds of stuff you can use. You can either narrow it down to what the tone you're after sounds like and get pickups and gear that sound like that, or just keep trying stuff until you get a sound no one's heard before.

There are a lot of factors besides pickups that go into a unique tone. Eric Johnson uses the same gear that 100's of thousands of guitarists use -Strats, Marshalls, Dimarzio pickups - but it's easy to recognize his playing. Dimbag Darryl was quoted in an interview as saying it wasn't the equipment he used but the settings he dialed it in to and how he had it wired in his rig that gave him his tone.

And before someone else beats me to it: "A unique, individual sound is all in the fingers!":laugh2:

Re: I need a complex sound

okay, the guy asked for suggestions on a pickup, NOT lame lectures and dissertations on your tone philosophy. We all know you can get tones out of anything from a Chinese Epiphone to a hollowed out tree beaten with a stick. To anyone fitting this bill - spare us your need to sound self-righteous - trust me, no one is impressed.

Whoa, lighten up, man! I doubt anyone here was trying to be "self righteous". The dude asked a *very* vague question: "how do I get a complex sound?" The easy way out would be to say get a "Fred" or a "Screamin Demon" but the truth is that no pickup will give him a "complex sound" by itself.

Sometimes the shoe we offer others fits best on our own foot. :6:

Was it because I misspelled Dimebag's name?

you can get anything.. from a full shred, distortion, miracle man, emg 89 or 81, VHII, evolution or breed. maybe a paf or paf pro. screamin demon or seths ... ...
the list is endless

I was actually thinking about getting a FRED or a Demon, but I'm unsure. I play alot of hard rock. I want something will help me to sound different from anyone else, but can still rock and have clarity. Any suggestions?

Re: I need a complex sound

Yeah, but we can make some assumptions such as hmmmm it's a Duncan forum AND the Pickup Lounge, so perhaps a complex sound means uhhhh PICKUPS? We can probably also assume he means electric guitar, and knowing this forum - at least a bluesy growl, if not full out distortion.

I like the Fred a lot. If you don't need crazy harmonics, and want sweetness, ALWAYS consider the Alnico 2 Pro - not the most articulate or shreddy sound, but it can give you a ton of sweet overtones if the guitar is a nice piece of wood.

For clarity and versatility do consider the Custom 5 and the VPAFs from Dimarzio.

Man, you Vorlons think you have it all wrapped up, don't you? Thank goodness you all split beyond the rim with those punk shadows. :alcoholic

Re: I need a complex sound

I have tried most of the dimarzio line. Most of them have a more "modern" sound than the duncans. The FRED has a crazy fuzzy presence thing going on that allows Satch to get the harmonics. There are other pickups in their line that have the same feature including norton, tone zone, breed, evolution, and some others.

They've all got a touch of the "cocked wah" and sizling presence to them that if EQed right will really sound unique.

If I were you, I'd put a FRED in a mahogony superstrat and get a parametric EQ to tailor with the mid frequencies. If you need more output, try the norton or breed. If you need even more output, try the evolution.

If you're looking for something original go with a wacky Dimarzio cause honestly....less people use em. Duncans do many sounds well...but you tend to have the same tone as everyone else as far as pickups are concerned.

I'd also look into different amps.....and different fingers....that's the biggest thing IMO.
