Try the Ibanez DE-7's tape echo mode. It's not analog, but it's very guitar friendly. You might find an old Boss DM-2 analog for around $200, but they continue to go up in price. I use both, and the DE-7 can do quite a good impersonation of the DM-2.

Cheers.......................wahwah

+1 I used a DM-3 for years and replaced it with a De-7 and i'm very happy with it.

I also recommend the Ibanez AD9, the reissue isn't quite as good as the original or the Maxon, but it is more affordable. However for just under $200 you should be able to find a vintage analog delay (Boss DM or the Ibanez/Maxon). In the modeling category I'm a big fan of the Line 6 Echo Park, it sounds almost as good plus you get tap tempo.

If you can wait a month to a month and a half, Malekko Heavy Industry is going to put out a 600ms all analog delay, true bypass, expression pedal input and the size of an MXR box for $190.

It's big. And it's digital. But the Boss DD20 rules. The analog sims are spot on. So you can have analog delay with tap tempo, plus mod delay, and the ability to tap in eigths with your foot and get triplets...for U2 stuff.

Do give the Rocktron Short Timer delay( $70 new) a try and you might be pleasantly surprised. Its a nice warm analog sounding delay which is perfect for a little ambience, slapback or anything upto 400ms of delay. You can get it to oscillate easily too.

I've heard good things about the shortimer delay, I might try that and save soe cash. Good tip!

+2 on the Short Timer, since that's how many I own. They're a bit quirky, but for the price, I can deal with it. I got mine used on eBay for $25 and $28 respectively.

Well, Rich S and nebucanazza sold me, just snagged me a Short Timer off of Ebay for $40 + shipping. Any settings I should try or that work for you guys?

I have a nice Dan Electro Dan Echo for sale pretty cheap over in the buy trade section. It sounds like it's dead on what you are looking for. I used this one for several years and would not have swapped it out except for the stuff we are doing at my church now. Our Worship Pastor keeps bringing in all this stuff for me to learn with the U2 style delay lines. For me to pull that stuff off live I had to step up to a new Boss Digital with tap tempo so this one is just sitting unused in the closet now.

^ heard some good things about the Dan Electro echos too.

Arion made a nice old purely analog delay called the SAD-1. It probably costs $90 off fleabay. Roughly 255 ms delay I think and it oscillates really easily which lets you make really cool UFO noises or do the intro to get out of my yard. Very warm, but the delay time is shorter than I would prefer. Good for ambiance, but not good for pink floyd delays.

The thing is dirt simple - just experiement. There are so many ways to use a delay, it's hard to recommend settings. I usually set one for a single short delay with the mix level set fairly low - just for making solos sound bigger. Switching this setting from "Short" to "Shorter" gives a slapback that's good for rootsy stuff.

The other one I set for a couple of repeats, with the mix set for echos nearly as loud as the dry signal - that one's for rhythmic echos ala Andy Summers or The Edge.

One thing I just noticed on mine - they make some weird digital noise when the delay time pot is turned down real low - like from 9 o'clock down to the bottom. It's a big deal because I never use it down there, and I believe you can get the same time setting using "Shorter" with the pot cranked up. Just something to watch out for.

Have fun with it. Big green 3-knob delays are :cool3:
