I need a new Speaker for my Koch

I think that the stock Koch(Jensen) one is dying out. I need a single 12" 8 ohms speaker capable of handling 50 watts.

What would be a good and affordable replacement? Maybe something from the standard celestion or eminence line? I found the sound of the combo a bit too bright and raspy for my tastes. I'm looking for something warmer this time, but not too bass heavy. The bass doesn't really have to be that tight either. Something balanced and sweet.

Any recommendations?

I'm a big Eminence fan. They have such a variety of 12" guitar speakers available, it's hard to tell. In my 2x12, I have a Governor and a Wizard. Each of those are pretty midrange heavy, but the combination shows that each emphasizes a different midrange frequency, so they make a great lead tone together. In my 4x10, I have Legend 105s, which are really well balanced. They have a couple different versions of their 12" Legends.

I'd look on Ebay and see if I could find a made in the UK Celestion Vintage 30...they'll handle the power of your amp. Get a used but guaranteed to be perfect, Made in the UK speaker and not a newer one made in China. Avoid the Modern Lead. A Classic 80 might be a nice choice too. But I'd look for a Vintage 30. If you're not going to play to loud and blow it, the 30 watt G12H30 would actually be my first choice. Lew

Governor and Wizard are two of the four eminences that I've mostly been looking at, the others are the Cannabis Rex and the Swamp Thang. Can you tell me what the Governor and the Wizard sound like on their own? Do you have any clips? And is your 2*12 closed back? My Koch has an open back... the Wizard is said to be made for closed backs. I wonder if it's a big deal.

I tried to look for Celestions at the finnish used market... not too common, especially the english ones. My amp has a 25w mode so I guess I wouldn't really need a 50w speaker. I mostly tend to use the 25w mode anyway. But the G12H30 looks to be even more rare than the V30. I'll keep looking.

Re: I need a new Speaker for my Koch

when i read your thread yesterday the cannabis rex imediately came to mind. its got a nice big warm sound with a full but not over bearing bass responce and a smokey high end. the reason i didnt recommend it is its only 50w. if you dont run your amp full throttle then youll probably be fine with it.

it will definitly warm up a dark amp and once it breaks in its one of my favorite speakers.

i really like the celestion gold too but its expensive and on the bright side. the g12h is another favorite and a good match tonally but the wattage would scare me enough to try something else.

i think youll like the rex

My 2x12 is closed-back. I don't really know how they sound individually, since I have only used them in combination.

The Cannabis Rex has been my #1 choice so far... thanks for reaffirming it! I've had a look at the Eminence Tone Guide and checked around the net, it seems like a very good choice. Perhaps the best for me.
