I need an inexpensive compressor..........

.....that is easy to use and sounds good. I will be using it 2 ways....for funk guitar rhythm stuff and country finger picking clean stuff. As far as price, a hundred bucks or less, new or used.

What are your faves.

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

Marshall Edward?

Way below 100 bucks new, and very underrated IMO. Just like all Marshall pedals!

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

Used Danelectro Surf & Turf- probably about $30, and it is essentially a dyna comp clone.

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

Dynacomp. My only complaint is that you need a screwdriver to change the battery. Thankfully that's infrequently needed.

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

Guess I'll be the first to suggest the good ol' Boss. Maybe I'm talking out of turn though. Pretty much all my Boss compressor experience was with one modded by T. Jauernig. :)

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

I'd look into the Xotic SP.. Haven't tried it, but it sure looks intriguing, and it receives a lot of praise.

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

I'd be inclined to try the Joyo Compressor, since it's possibly a copy of the revered Ross compressor, and it's dirt cheap at $40...

Is the Ross Compressor revered? I've had one since forever, but always thought it did too much stair-stepping to be really useful. I should probably give mine another try.

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

In that price range, I would go for a Boss CS-3.

But, in my honest opinion, compressors are seriously affecting your dynamics and raising the floor noise, it worths it to get a good compressor from the very beginning.
I've got 5 different compressors (Boss CS-2, MXR Dyna Comp reissue, MXR Custom Comp, T.Rex CompNova, Mad Professor Forest Green Compressor) before I went to the final one: the Wampler EGO Compressor.
Wampler EGO Compressor has anything you will ever need in a compressor and, it's quiet enough. From squeezed to transparent compresison, to parallel compression (Like the Barber), to sustainer (like the CS-3 and Forest Green), to a blend of everything together.

Tag price is $200. If you register in their forum as a member, you got a discount of $20, so, final price would be $180.
You wouldn't be never ever in the search of a better compressor (as I did 5 times, expending way more money).
Just my 2 cts.

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

I am liking the BYOC Optical compressor I built not long a ago. Totally different feel to the compression than the Ross/Dynacomp family of copmpressors

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

when I think compressor
I always think Dyna Comp

but the Boss should be fine

all the circuits for them I have seen are essentially the same

please no get the DOD
me buddy has the one
it be crap

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

Thanks for all the responses....looks like a trip to the music store may be in order.

I dig this one too......

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

Supposedly the Biyang Compressor is very similar to the ROSS compressor except with a lower noise floor and I will look to buy one soon. This guy (while mainly talking about bass) reviews heaps of compressors and compares them http://www.ovnilab.com/. Also depends if you want clean transparent compression or more of a country or jangly sounding compressor (ross comp and its similar version)

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

The CMATMODS comps are really really good. The Signa is a more neutral sounding pedal, one that you can leave on all the time and it will just enhance your sound. The deluxe comp is a Ross clone I believe, so more your traditional sound. Chad makes great pedals and stands by his products.

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

After reading several positive post on several forums about Biyang 'Baby Boomer' pedals I just got a Biyang Baby Boomer CO-10 Compress X compressor for $50.. Works fairly well so far. Also picked up the Biyang Baby Boomer Fuzzstar FZ-10.. Very satisfied so far.. Looking to try Joyo next, couple bucks less.. Seems like they are pretty much identicle to Biyang..

Re: I need an inexpensive compressor..........

Well, I ended up buying a brand new Dyna Comp....way to squishy for what I use one for. Picked up a used Joyo for 25 bucks and love it.....not nearly as drastic and the attack control is very useful.

Glad you found one you like. Had you not.... I was going to suggest the Line 6 tonecore series called a Constrictor. Very under-rated, very flexible, gets great reviews, and the only compressor I have kept after going through several high end ones. You really should check out this website--- http://www.ovnilab.com/

Its devoted to testing about every compressor out there.
