I need help choosing pickups for my Fender Cyclone

hello everyone! I'm new to this board so... let me start by giving you my setup and a description of what sound I'm looking for.

I'm currently using a Fender Cyclone(original) loaded with a Duncan SH1 59 in the bridge and a Fender gold Lace sensor in the neck. I play everything from Radiohead type clean souding stuff to heavy stuff like Isis/Crowbar. So as you can imagine, I need some help figuring out which Humbucker/single coil combo will alow me to go from extemely mellow to extremely heavy. I tend to lean towards a darker tone, something that cuts through without blistering highs. I also like my distortion tone to be a little loose sounding, I'm not a fan of super tight distortion. I like my palm mutes to sound sludgy.

I think the 59 with distortion sounds ok but seems to have some harsh highs (to my ears) and the clean tone sounds even worse. I think the lace sensor sounds good on clean and distortion but the output is obviously lower than the 59's and the bass response is much greater.I know for sure that I want to replace the 59 but I'm not sure about the Lace Sensor.

what do you guys think?

any suggestion for a good combo would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance

Mark,

Custom Custom, if the gold lace sensor is ok right now, dont replace it right now.

For the single, a Quarter Pound, or an SSL-6, both "tapped", would be nice. Use a push/pull pot for the volume, and you get an additional range of tones.

Use a push/pull tone pot to split the humbucker, and your range of tones doubles again. I think that adds up to eight unique tones out of two pups. ;)

thanks for all your suggestions!

I've been reading a lot about the Duncan CC. it seems like everyone really likes the CC's buttery tone. How is the clean tone? How does it compare to a 59B? can it go from clean to classic rock to heavy? would it be a good match for my lace sensor?

Well it's 16.4k, so I think it will do heavy just fine :).

I'm definitely leaning towards a CC for the bridge position, thanks for bringing it to my attention. however... I don't think the gold lace sensor will keep up with a 14.k humbucker.

can you guys suggest a single coil pickup that will hold its own against a 14.k humbucker without sacrificing tone?

does anyone else recommend a Quarter Pound or Custom? will these give me hum problems?

what about Cool Rails?

thanks again,
