I need help....

I have a 20th Anniversary Squier. Bought a new wiring kit. Wired to SSS Strat by the schematic.

I had it working via the pick guard, then installed, then nothing, took out, checked all connections and sodder joints. Re-did the grounds since I had a bad hum, checked it with just pick guard, worked but not as good as first time. Re-assembled.

Plugged it back in, nothing. Took out and replaced all wires, cleaned connections, re-wired, replaced the volume pot to be sure (250Ks), and the switch. Checked with pickguard only, and less output than the last time. Took out and reviewed.

Plugged back in just with pick guard, now nothing at all.

I believe the pick ups, original to the guitar, gave out. This is not the first time I've done this, but definitely the first time this has happened.

Thoughts...dead pups or something else?

Re: I need help....

I had a simular thing happen to my Jazzmaster. In my case the wiring was shorting out to the sheilding when I put the guard on.

Your problem may be the same or anothe likely cause would be a broken wire that makes good contact in some positions but when it moves it doesn't.

A picture may help to diagnose.

Re: I need help....

I know this may sound odd, but are the positive and negative wires in the right place on the output jack? Also, check to see if any of the soder joints (where the fine wire meets the bigger wire on the strat bobbin) are touching anything that would ground them, like copper shielding.

Re: I need help....

I'll get a pic up tomorrow... wires are clear of the shielding though. I'm just mega stumped and dead pups are the only thing I can think of at this point.... thanks for the feedback.

Re: I need help....

The black wires are soddered, but touching because there is too much wire cover removed.

Re: I need help....

When you said it worked with the pick guard, how did work exactly? Did the pickups work when the pick guard was a away from the the body, like if you tap on them with a metal object? Another thing to check is, if you've taken the jack out, that the ground wire/shielding isn't touching somehow only when you plug the guitar cable in.

Re: I need help....

Could these black wires with too much insulation removed be touching anything going to ground?

Re: I need help....

If you want to test the pickups, break out the multimeter set to the ~20K range, and test the DC resistance of each pickup. If the pickups are all single coils, the DCR should be at least about 5K or greater.
