I need some advice on the Jazz Neck model.

I finally decided to buy my first set of Seymour Duncan pickups. I've spoken to Mr. Wymore at Black Rose Customs, and i'm going to place an order there next monday.

I'm going for a Zebra Custom Custom in the brigde, and most likely a Reverse Zebra Jazz in the neck. The guitar is an Ibanez 270DX, which sounds very resonant, brigth and warm, but with little mids.

I just need some information about how the Jazz Neck reacts to gain, both high gain and breakup gain. I want a neck humbucker that is pretty brigth, so that i can get a tiny bit of "single coil" chime, and avoid that really bassy sound associated with neck humbuckers. It also has to sound pretty smooth, so that it doesn't sound like shattered glass and break up very unevenly under gain.

So, i'd like to hear your opinions on the Jazz Neck.

It's not bad, but for what you want, I'd go with the APH. This one does exactly what you just described.

I love the Jazz neck. Over and over again it has proven to be old faithful to me. With the Custom Custom, it's a good match IMO, one of my favorites. It's really good under gain, for me anyway. Others may feel differently but I like its tone. It's very articulate. Check out my Brobucker clips. In clip 1, you can hear the Jazz neck clean and dirty.

I love the Jazz neck! It is less hot than a '59, with slightly less boomy bass and articulate. I happen to think it is very versatile and reacts well to gain (doesn't fart out, which is why I think a lot of metal players love it.)

I feel that the Jazz is just like you described. I haven't tried other SD hums in the neck though, so I can't really compare. But it's really good.

The Jazz is exactly what you described. I had one in a Ibanez SZ and currently have one in an RG42.

It sounds like you know what you want, and from what you're describing, it sounds like the Jazz N.

I recently found that one of my favorite neck pickups isn't even a neck pickup, it's the Jazz Bridge in the neck. It seems like a cross between a Jazz N and 59N

That sounds pretty interesting.... I can imagine that using a Jazz Brigde in the neck position would sound a little warmer and hotter than the Jazz Neck model?

I think the Jazz sounds like a really clear, low power humbucker that can work to sound bluesy under distortion. The APH is really classic and has that sponge and special sparkle.

If either of those 2 descriptions sounds appealing, I think they are accurate.

They both have a single coilish thing to them, but not a hybrid sound. More like one is phat and classic (APH), and the other is modern and smooth - I like both.

I just prefer to match magnets, so I only use the Jazz if I have an A5 in my bridge. That's just me. There is NO reason to do this.

I thought the Jazz sounded great.

my Jazz neck is currently residing in my Ibanez RGA121. the reason why i invested in this pickup is that it handles clean AND high gain effectively, especially in the latter situation when single note clarity is retained. it has that inherent 'airy' tone which is very useable in various genre settings, if you wish for a crunchy neck tone, the Alnico II Pro is superb.

my fender, basswood body, maple cap.. tuned to E standard..
has a nickel covered Jazz neck.
all i can say is that it has a good Bass, crunchy/sparkle mids.. and Singing lead tones.
UNDER high gain, it doesn´t get muddy.
but under medium and Crunchy gain, i don´t know.
i don´t play with that Faggy ammount distortion (YET, hahahahah) Heheheheh
NO OFFENSE to those who play with mild and vintage gain AT ALL.
so, don´t worry. it´s just a silly insane language that me and erlend developped in the MSN. ahahahahahaha
