I picked up one of those overpriced 1 watt Marshalls - the JCM 800 one

I guess it's all relative. Since I'm only playing in the house these days, having my Budda and the other higher powered amps I've owned is like having a sports car and only being able to drive in the city, never really getting to open it up. I hate the modelers I've tried and want good tone.

I bought a used JCM1 combo that the original owner had put a 10" Greenback in, but I wasn't completely happy with the sound of it. Sounded great through the 12" Weber Legacy G12H30 in my Budda but was just small and sort of tinny sounding through the 10" GB.

Looking at the specs the GB has only a 14 oz. magnet so I thought I'd try a heavier magnet 10" before just abandoning the combo's speaker and just running it through a separate 12" cab. Saw that the Celestion G10 Vintage has a 30 oz. magnet so I picked one up from Avatar and it arrived this morning (which was a pleasant surprise!).

It did what I was hoping it would do - made the tiny combo sound noticeably bigger. I don't feel the need to get a separate cab to run it through now, thank goodness.

Btw, I originally was going to get the JTM1 but the dealer I was e-mailing with for their best price blew it by telling me to call the next day, Monday instead of just taking my order that Sunday. This made me aware of the JCM that was available and I nabbed it instead.

I'm real glad I got the JCM model. The Gain and Master Volume let me take it all the way down to whisper levels while maintaining an overdriven tone. And that little 1 watt can get to shouting levels when cranked which is about the loudest i could ever really run my bigger amps anyway. Probably still overkill if you live in an apartment or condo but for a house it's about perfect. It actually cleans up nicely with the guitar's volume knob and is fairly versatile in the range of gain you can dial in.

Fun little amp!

I love the title of this thread.

Seemed nice when I tried. Congrats!

Goldtop looks so good next to that marshall combo.

I wonder what it would sound like with a 4x12?

Man I still have never tried one of those things. I gotta see if I can track one down around here.

Not overpriced if it fits a need, and does the job well.

Congrats!

1 watt is indeed about perfect in a house, while too much in apartment buildings...

Congrats, while expensive, they do look and sound really cool!

too loud for my apartment, wish it was less loud and I owned it tho, but I have gas... cheers :)

You guys ever do a speaker change or anything tone related and the next day, with fresh ears, it just doesn't sound as good because your ears got used to it the day before?

Thank God this didn't happen! The Celestion G10 Vintage is a great match with the amp. That 31 oz. magnet gives it the oomph of a 12". Super happy with this little bugger.

I wish I could find a dealer that has most of that series in stock. Not sure I'd get one yet, but I definitely want to try them all.

I'm glad to hear good things about the Celestion G10. I'd imagine that they sound better than most 10's that some stock in amps, even if they are Jensen Special Design or whatever.

I took a chance on it after hearing the "official" Marshall demo of it and liking what I hear without actually trying one out first.

About the G10, I was tempted to get the Weber Legacy 10" (it also has a 30 oz. magnet) but haven't read any reviews of it, and the price with shipping was about $35 more than the Vintage. It probably sounds good, though. My 12" Legacy sure does.
