When converting a H/H guitar to an H/S configuration, should I change the respective volume pot to a 250k? Or is it simply matter of preference?

I think its preference. Give it a go and see what its like. But yeah 250k works a better with singles as it takes out some of that high shrill. I guess it depends on what pickups too,

Re: I should know this...

Its definitely not a rule... for me in general i dislike the sound of humbuckers with 250's more than i i dislike the sound of singles with 500's so I just keep the 500's most of the time.

Just try it and see... if you dont like it find a different pot.

Re: I should know this...

I think you should consider if the pickup is h true single coil or a humbucker in sc size

Re: I should know this...

All comments are correct. It's a personal preference for sure, but generally speaking the 500k works best with buckers and the 250k works best with singles.

If you already have a 500k pot, I would try that first and see how you like it. If it's too bright/shrill with the single just change it to a 250k (assuming you have two vol pots). If you currently only have one vol pot and it sounds good with the bucker but too bright with the single, then beaubrummels suggestion for a 500k/250k concentric pot it spot on.

Re: I should know this...

thanks for the insight! installing for a buddy so tomorrow so im going to just leave the existing 500k pot and if he doesn't like it, he can buy me an additional 12 pack of IPA to install the 250k :)

Re: I should know this...

The problem with the stacked concentric pots is the need to use the stacked double knobs. Would love to see a stacked pot that uses one knob like the blend/stereo pots but with one being 250K and the other being 500K and adjusted with one knob.

I'm sure someone does or can make one. You just might have to dig for them.

Or you can put a 500k resistor in parallel with the volume pot to get 250k. Solder one end to the selector switch tab where the pickup connects and the other to ground. If you can't find a 500k resistor, a 470k will work just as well. The resistance will be approx 242k for the single-coil. I've used this method and it works.
