I might be getting another guitar here soon and it has rust on the pole pieces and the slugs. What is the best way to get it off, if even possible?

I used a dremel tool with the right pads. If you carfully disassemble the pup, (no need to unsolder wires), you can push the slugs out, polish them, and put them back in upside-down. The inner part isn't likely to be rusted. It was fairly easy when I did it with a Custom.

i usually use extra fine steel wool

It may not be a bad idea to use a brush vacuum to clean out all the small particles in the holes before you put anything back in. Make sure the pole pieces are free of foreign particles too.

Just pull out the pole pieces and scrub em with some scotch brite, though the dremel and polish idea doesnt sound too bad either.
