I spy with my birdseye!

Hello, my name is Chris and I have a problem. It has been one day since my last Telecaster build.

Man, I just love double bound Teles! :D

I was surfing around looking for something guitar related and came across a picture of this Tele body with a ridiculous birdseye maple top. I tracked down the company out of Australia and emailed them for info.

A few weeks later I had an Alder body with a maple caps front and back. I sourced a matching neck with an Ebony board from Warmoth and then they sat....

...and sat.

I finally got around to this one and now we are done.

I had always envisioned this in a red or orange(ish) color to set off the creme binding. I experimented with red stains, but ultimately I used alcohol dyes.

The stain after sanding it out.

I applied another couple of coats and hit it with some clear.

Blech! Too pink and faded.

Do over

I mixed up some red dye with a touch of brown.

I then hit that with some clear to see how it might look. I think this will work :D

A logo and start laying on the clear.

I went with TV Jones Starwood set and no guard.

Dress the stainless frets and roll the Ebony edges.

I think I just about have it dialed in. Still adjusting the pickups but it sounds pretty good so far. I still have a Jaguar and a couple Les Pauls on the bench, then I am taking a break. I love building and tweaking, but I am running out of room.

Do you do these builds for your own collection? Or to enjoy for a little while then sell? Have you ever thought of making your own logo and headstock shape? Wondering because this is the second awesome build I've seen from you and as PFDarkside mentioned a group photo of your work would be appreciated!

These builds are for me. I have sold off some in the past that I didn’t care for sonically but it has been awhile. I just prefer to build guitars I would like over buying something more expensive and then modding it. I don’t even want to guess what the Fender custom shop would charge for such a build.

I enjoy searching for deals on parts and then seeing what I can make out of it. I have made a serious effort over the last couple of years to either sell off or use parts I have been hoarding. I also sold off a fair number of guitars I just wasn’t playing or in some cases never played. Nothing I built mind you, just guitars I pulled from storage.

I have toyed with idea of building under my own name but they would have to be more unique designs. These builds are just putting together combinations of parts that already exist that I prefer.
