I think I've just played my next guitar....

PRS McCarty w/ Rosewood neck....but in solid black.

I've always had a real dislike for PRS guitars.  I don't really like the way they're shaped, and the finishes are way to pretty for me to feel comfortable with.

Anyway...I've been looking for a Gibson LP to replace my Epi as my main player.  I still think it's a good insturment, but this axe gets used and abused alot and some of it's shortcommings are starting to become evident.  The problem is....Gibson's are getting pretty expensive around here.....expensive enough to put them in the same price bracket as PRS. 

So when I saw this plain black McCarty sitting in the store I decided I'd give it a go....and I was pleasantly surpsed to find it's the smoothest playing guitar I've ever found.  It's not too heavy, has a nice ballance in both sound and feel, and it's more comfortable to sit with than an LP.  The guitar just likes to be played.  The tone itself was smooth and thick, but not quite as muddy as an LP.  I think it's good enough that I won't be satisfied with buying a lesser guitar.

Anyway....I'm going to figure some things out and talk prices and payment plan over getting either that one one just like it.

It's still a touch fancy....but at least the finish isn't high gloss black....and it'll dull over time, which should take care of the "Look at the kid with new shoes at school" feeling.

The neck itself felt great. I was originally pretty hesitant to get rosewood....I figured it'd sound good clean and with a sizling overdrive, but that it'd mud up too much under high gain. But I spent some time over on the Birds and Moons forum (kinda the LPF for PRS, but less attitude) and it seems as though the rosewood McCarty is designed to sound somewhat similar to an LP....which will be good for what I'm after.

I honestly think that the McCarty is the most perfect humbucking guitar design ever. It's the #1 guitar at bridging the gap between Strats, Pauls, and Superstrats. Since I've used McCarties as much as strats and pauls, I'm starting to think that it's a superior guitar to both in many ways. The neck profile couldn't possibly be better, and the more you use it, the more you know that it's ergonomically perfect. I've installed the same pickups in my McCarty as my LP, so when I compare them, I'm hearing the real difference between the two guitar designs. The LP has a tone I'll always love, but the McCarty has better string to string balance and definition. The bridge really connects to the body tonally, so the sustain is equal to a Les Paul.
The ability to split the coils is something Gibson loses on, but the McCarty gives nice pseudo Fender tones. I love Strats and Pauls, but if I had to choose 1 guitar, I'd be inclined to go with a McCarty, for sheer tone and versatility.

I think it's the first time that I notice Scott feeling sorry for selling an instrument.... You've mentionned this in a couple of posts until now... would it be that you have seller's remorse? Not that this is funny but it is kinda odd... you're almost as much a gear hoe as Jonesey is.... We can ask T4D, I'm sure he doesn't like it anyways....

BTW: Nice guitar! Sounds like a good buy... seems to fit you too... go for it!

For some reason, I think it suits you.

We'll see. I'm going to stick with the stock pickups to start with.....and I'll probably leave my Epi and Strat as my "EMG" guitars....but you never know.


Now I just need to work up the balls to jam a pair of eye screws in it..... :dance:

That's one thing I noticed.....I didn't have to make any adjustments to my grip/playing....it just sorta sat in my hand and I ripped away. The bending was really easy, lots of room to dig in, and the neck felt comfortable when chording.

How is the upper fret access? I don't really go high alot, so I never thought to check it. I can't see it being any worse than the LP I'm playing now, but I'd like an opinion on it regardless.

One other question....how do you adjust the intonation?
