I tried out the Elixir OptiWeb strings

I put on a set of OptiWeb strings tonight so I finally got a chance to hear what they sound like. I would say I think they sound better than the NanoWeb and PolyWeb strings do. They probably sound a bit brighter than a nickel string.

But they still sound duller than an uncoated string does. But overall I thought they were fairly decent. I'm going to stick with my GHS Boomers however.

i only use coated strings on my acoustics since i play them so rarely. if i didnt, id have to change strings every time i pick one up

Hmmm, brighter than nickel (uncoated), but duller than uncoated.

So you find the OptiWeb brighter than nickel but duller than nickel? Do you get to choose when they have that variable effect? Those are some very interesting strings

Yes, that's my experience too.
But you also said they were brighter than nickel strings (which are uncoated). That seems to be contradictory. Plus, I have never heard any coated strings that are brighter than uncoated strings.

Me neither...I've seen coated strings come close like the newer D'Addarios, but still not worth the expense for me.

Pure Nickel strings are uncoated yes. But they are duller sounding than say Nickel Plated Steel.

Yes, pure nickel sounds "duller" than nickel plated strings. But they are NOT duller than any coated strings. You said in your op that "They probably sound a bit brighter than a nickel string".
