Re: I wanna put these in my SG

if i wanted a Jazz and a JB i'd get used ones for cheaper but that's cool if you're into the uh look or whatever.

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

Nice combo: I love that set. Beautiful and versatile. On top of that, the covers definitely look beautiful.

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

Meh.

There's better sets to throw into a SG, IMHO. I'm sure you could get any standard 'bucker from Duncan with those same cosmetics just by asking for 'em as a shop floor custom.

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

It's a good set, but you'd be better off with a Custom 5 in the bridge.

+1. The JB is fickel & doesn't work well in some guitars. Many of us SG owners really like the C5, with a '59N or JazzN in the neck, which has a much higher success rate than JB's. For those that like a warmer bridge, using 250K pots with a C5 is very nice.

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

Update: On the strength of everyone's input, I decided to go with the '59 and C5 combo.

There seem to be a lot of opinions both ways between the JB and the C5. It's like they're equally loved or not loved.

The pups are bought and on the way. I'll post the results later.

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

I think you'll be happy with the results. I've got a '59 (neck) and JB (bridge) in my LP, and I'm pleased with that combination. I am tempted to see what the C5 would be like in the bridge.

In my SG, I've got P-90s. Always pushing those with other people. If you had a second SG, I'd say drop in a pair of P-90s and let that beast bite the audience's collective ass. :)

Thanks, Keith. Yeah, it would be great to have another SG to drop some P-90s in!

As it is though, I'm going to JP wire the SG (assuming I can hog-out enough wood to get the push/pulls to fit), so I'll have access to SOME kind of single coil sounds.

Getting very anxious to put this thing together!

Funny you should say that. My LP has the JP wiring in it. All four knobs are push-pull: series/parallel, phase in/out, coil splits.

Let us know how it is!

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

DAMMIT!

Got the '59 in the mail today.

I DIDN'T KNOW IT NORMALLY COMES WITH SINGLE-CONDUCTOR! I can't JP wire this thing.

Keith do you have a custom ordered '59??

Bad on me for not doing my research. :smash:

Back to the Jazz SH-2 I guess.

Anyone want a '59 cheap? :34:

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

Hmmm…That's strange. My '59 is the four-wire version. I don't think it's custom; I got it from Guitar Center. Can anyone shed some light?

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

Yeah, what a dummy I am for not asking the eBay seller about it, too. But he should've had it in the description!

After some searching, I did find a four-conductor '59 online that I'm going to order now.

Apparently a rare beast... the four-conductor '59 in nickel!

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

I'm going to JP wire the SG (assuming I can hog-out enough wood to get the push/pulls to fit), so I'll have access to SOME kind of single coil sounds.

I've done the JP wiring in several SG's and never had to take out any wood, which is pretty thin there anyways, and trying it could be a disaster in the making. Standard push-pulls just fit in the cavity, and the rear cover may or may not have a very slight buldge, which no one notices, including yourself. I've put a thin piece of plastic over the push-pulls before I seal it up sometimes, to be sure that nothing touches the shielding on the rear cover plate & causes a short. But that's much preferable over trying to carve away wood.

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

But that's much preferable over trying to carve away wood.

I hear what your saying. Believe me, I don't want to have to do it but I've tried the pots in there and it really needs another 1/16" or so. From what I gather after searching for days on this subject, the depth of SG control cavities vary pretty widely depending on the make, model, and year.

I'm sending the guitar off to a well-respected luthier with a full wood shop. I'm going to ask his opinion. If he doesn't recommend it based on the wood thickness, I may have to live with the bulge, or scrap the idea all together.

Re: I wanna put these in my SG

As for the '59 versus the Jazz, if you're low on money my opinion would be to get the Jazz in nickel cover. I don't think a big mahogany/rosewood guitar like an SG is going to need more warmth (i.e. '59 versus Jazz), and in my Schecter C-1 Classic (which is maple/walnut ply neck-through with mahogany wings) it's still got tons of warmth with a cover.

As for the combo, '59/JB combo is very ESP-ish. For a while it seemed all their Duncan-loaded guitars had that combo. However, the C5 supposedly sounds like a bumped-up '59.

My opinion: see if anyone is selling the used pickups out of a Schecter C-1 Classic (Jazz/JB). Maybe you could save some more money there....

Ebay: used Seymour Duncan '59 Sadly it's one wire, not four wire, or at least that's how it looks. He doesn't say if it's a neck or bridge model....
