I want i pick up that sounds like this...what i 've to buy?

Re: I want i pick up that sounds like this...what i 've to buy?

personally I think the majority of that tone is coming fromt he amp, it's very punchy & with reverb - typical fender. Most paf's will do.

mh...i've understand what you want to say..
but i'm referring a t that slightly nasal tone..not particulary to bass middle or highs...but that nasal sound that you hear..i think you MUST have unpotted covered pick up for this...not sure about alnico 5 or 2...i don't know when gibson started to pot their pick ups...but this sounds like a sligthly nasal seth lover..the 59 is way more open...

It reminds me of degaussed A2... real woody and clear, but in a more limited frequency range than an A5.

If you degaussed a Seth enough, I bet it would be close....

the only thing that make me don't like a2 pick ups is the lack of bass at bridge..
played burstbucker (all type) but like them only at neck..too thin for me at bridge.
what do you think of 57 plus and seth lover bridge about their bass responce?

For example i've a vintage epiphone G400 with a seth of 59...and 50's wiring... and a gotoh heavy bridge.
what i like a lot is the balance between neck and bridge...ok...bridge is more brilliant..but has a lot of bass...

In the gibson sg with 57 classic for example (but also with 490R - 490T) you hear that the bridge is lacking some bass...

For sure...alnico 5 or 2 that pick up is unpotted...and this is one of that things that make "that sound".
Uncovered sounds more open and airy...covered but potted sounds a little bit costricted and unidimensional...
infact except the covered pick up that come on my yamaha sg3000 (spinex pick ups..something exceptional) and the always covered that come on my Yamaha sa2200 (335 much better copy) i find covered pick ups to be very straight..mono...for lacks of better words...

an a5 PAF will always rock in the bridge. Maybe like a 59/seth combo

and lots of people do the 5/2 combo so don't worry about it sounding weird

the burstbucker pro's have Alnico V mags

Re: I want i pick up that sounds like this...what i 've to buy?

Could someone explain what "unpotted" means?

Is this something about the pickup construction? Or "pot" as in potentiometer?

Thanks for the edamacation!

An unpotted pickup is one that isn't sealed with wax. Pickups that are not potted can be a bit prone to feedback squeal when put under distortion.

Personally, for that sound, I'd go with an antiquity or a degaussed seth. If you wanna go through the custom shop you could get an unpotted pearly gates. I think that would be a winner.

edit: I think I may try to get some of the potting out of the pearly gates in my les paul, and degauss the A2 some. Should be fantastic PAF-y goodness.

Thanks man. I'm learning alot around here.

Of course, I still don't know what the unpottedness means to the tone... or why someone would want to degauss... but, one step at a time!

Re: I want i pick up that sounds like this...what i 've to buy?

Unpotted pickups are more open sounding, with more wooliness (just like the one in the video) IME. Degaussing does different things to different magnets, but generally evens out the eq and softens the response.

Antiquity for sure. Closest to a PAF that exist IMO.
