Hey guys...like the title says, I'm in the market for a 1x12 all tube amp.

I'm the bassist in my band but on some songs our organist will cover the bass tones and I will be playing some guitar.

I'm thinking Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue. What amps are comperable to this model?
What other options do I have under $1000? Thanks all!

get an old 03/04 jcm800 1X12 master volume combo 50 watter and live the dream! you can find em on ebay for like $800-$1000

Re: I want to buy a 1x12 tube amp

The new stuff by Crate is under a grand and gets you some great tones plus effects if you want them. What kind of wattage are you looking for? A Vox Valvetronix is a great way to go as well.

Re: I want to buy a 1x12 tube amp

I'm still a big fan of the Marshall 401 DSL. Great cleans, awesome distortion, and a very pedal-friendly front end. It's only 40 watts but has a great sounding recording out that I've run into the PA with good results. Oh yeah--it's lightweight, too.

Re: I want to buy a 1x12 tube amp

Thanks alot for responding guys!!!

You guys hit it on the head - here's what I'm looking for.
1. 1x12
2. lightweigt
3. excellent tone
4. pedal friendly
5. reliable
6. well built
7. low wattage 18-40watts - i can always use the house PA if need be.

As far as effects pedals, I'd be using delay, microsynth, phase, phlange, chorus, wah and OD. So it's important that the amp agrees with having pedals in front off it.

I appreciate your guy's input.

Check out the Laney combo's. The LC series is class AB with more overdrive capability and the VC series is class A with a sweet sweet clean and good overdrive. Plus they are very reasonable priced. Check them out on ebay.

Re: I want to buy a 1x12 tube amp

There's a big diff between 18 and 40 watts. Be sure you get enough headroom to make yourself happy otherwise, you''ll be selling it in no time at all.

Re: I want to buy a 1x12 tube amp

I'll second that DSL 401. I thought it was a really fun amp to play with-pretty lively. I think it's kind of overlooked in that class of amps.

How bout the new Traynors? They seem to be well liked and reasonably priced.

Re: I want to buy a 1x12 tube amp

For an amp that takes pedals well, has great cleans and plenty of headroom, the Fender Hot Rod Deluxe is a great amp, good bang for the buck. The amp's distortion channel is pretty useless except for lower gain blues stuff...but if you're getting your OD from a pedal it's not an issue.

Re: I want to buy a 1x12 tube amp

traynors are amazing amps.
the ycv 50blue has a master volume so even though its 50 watts, you can play at the lowest levels ive ever heard out of a tube amp, and still sounds good. marshall overdrive and cleans that are very versatile (from fender to vox)

18 watt marshalls are another way to go... or jtm45 kits... but those are only one channel and all...

"crate" v32 palomino is an amazing amp.

i think that for $500-$800 tube amp range, the traynor 50blue and crate v32 palomino take it all the way. the traynor having the perfect el34 tube amp tone and the crate having the perfect el84 tube amp tone. the traynor has the gain, the crate has the breakup

Re: I want to buy a 1x12 tube amp

I'm real happy with my Peavey Classic 30. They go pretty cheap, not heavy and all tube tone. I put in an old Marshall Celestion...sounds even better.

Re: I want to buy a 1x12 tube amp

You guys rock! Thanks for all the replies and suggestions.

Ok...my guitarist and I spent an hour and a half at GC tonight testing all the better tube amps in the "high end" room. That's the separate, glass housed room at most GC's that holds the "finer" amps and guitars.

Anyhow, I played the Marshall 1974x, Fender 65 Deluxe Reverb, Vox AC?, a Fender Supersonic and a Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb ( a 40 watt 2x10" combo). I used a Fender Custom Shop 1960s Strat.

After going back and forth from amp to amp (with the same guitar in hand), the Vibrolux came out the clear winner.

1. volume
2. fat tube tone
3. clear as a bell clean tones
4. decent break up

The Marshall was unreal in the natural OD department but had alot less volume than I acutally would need considering I don't mic up at practice and don't intend to. (either way, it's way too expensive). That said, I simply need a louder amp (but hte 1974x is awesome!).

Back to the Vibrolux - To mine and my guitarist's ears, the overall tone and character of the amp is close to flawless. It's the amp tone that I've heard in my head all along but just haven't been able to put my finger on...well, anyhow, I think my next step is to take my guitar and pedals that I intend to use to GC and see how the amp likes the rest off my rig.

I'll let you all know what I find.

Peace,
Chris

Try a Carvin Nomad 50 Watt. Carvin makes great amps for the buck!

I just bought a like brand new Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb on eBay for $850.00. I forgot all about the Carvin Nomad at the time. I think you can fetch one for $560.00 new from Carvin. Cool tweed and chicken head knobs!
