For the past 6 months I've been looking for a decent small amp that sounds good in the bedroom at very low volumes as well as through headphones. I've been through Marshall Valvestates and a MG30DFX (which is actually pretty decent), I have my POD XTL/Atomic combo, and I've played all the popular Line 6, Marshall, Crate, Behringer, Valvetronix, Roland, Peavey, tech 21, etc amps.
I was initially gonna go for a Roland Microcube, but I just didn't care for it that much.Too digital and glitchy, like Line 6 can be. I found this little VOX kinda hidden in the "high end" room of my local shop sitting on top of a 59 Bassman reissue. It took me all of about 20 seconds to fall in love with it. Unlike the Valvetronix, it's all digital, no tube. And while it lacks a little of the dynamics and smoothness on the top end the tube gives, it actually sounds better, IMO. It's not as flubby as the 15 and 30w Valvetronix. And the 800 model is voiced better (which is what I use 99.9% of the time), or just perhaps the speaker is a better voiced? All the models sound better IMO than the 15/30W Valvetronix, and it's easier to dial in a good tone...much less fiddling. the Bassman is REALLY good, and the dumble overdrive I'd actually use now.
It can run on 6 "c" batteries, has a carry strap...headphone/line out jack, a mic and CD input, and variable wattage (5/1.5/.5). And I can tell ya at 5 W it gets pretty dang loud. At lower volumes the half watt option sounds best..a little tighter and smoother. The effects are not highly programmable, but I'll only use delay and reverb, and they both sound really good.
Also the back panel is removeable so you can get an open back combo type sound and more spread. But I think all the models sound better with the back on.
Cost me $129.00 and is worth every penny :bigthumb: Wicked little amp, and the store I bought it at is going through them like hotcakes (the first run got bought up by all the sales guys). If ya need a killer little practice recording amp for the home, check it out!
I'm gonna try put up some clips over the weekend of the various models.
