For the past 6 months I've been looking for a decent small amp that sounds good in the bedroom at very low volumes as well as through headphones. I've been through Marshall Valvestates and a MG30DFX (which is actually pretty decent), I have my POD XTL/Atomic combo, and I've played all the popular Line 6, Marshall, Crate, Behringer, Valvetronix, Roland, Peavey, tech 21, etc amps.

I was initially gonna go for a Roland Microcube, but I just didn't care for it that much.Too digital and glitchy, like Line 6 can be. I found this little VOX kinda hidden in the "high end" room of my local shop sitting on top of a 59 Bassman reissue. It took me all of about 20 seconds to fall in love with it. Unlike the Valvetronix, it's all digital, no tube. And while it lacks a little of the dynamics and smoothness on the top end the tube gives, it actually sounds better, IMO. It's not as flubby as the 15 and 30w Valvetronix. And the 800 model is voiced better (which is what I use 99.9% of the time), or just perhaps the speaker is a better voiced? All the models sound better IMO than the 15/30W Valvetronix, and it's easier to dial in a good tone...much less fiddling. the Bassman is REALLY good, and the dumble overdrive I'd actually use now.

It can run on 6 "c" batteries, has a carry strap...headphone/line out jack, a mic and CD input, and variable wattage (5/1.5/.5). And I can tell ya at 5 W it gets pretty dang loud. At lower volumes the half watt option sounds best..a little tighter and smoother. The effects are not highly programmable, but I'll only use delay and reverb, and they both sound really good.

Also the back panel is removeable so you can get an open back combo type sound and more spread. But I think all the models sound better with the back on.

Cost me $129.00 and is worth every penny :bigthumb: Wicked little amp, and the store I bought it at is going through them like hotcakes (the first run got bought up by all the sales guys). If ya need a killer little practice recording amp for the home, check it out!

I'm gonna try put up some clips over the weekend of the various models.

Re: I went guitar shopping today and came home with...

I imagine it is a fine little amp. I love my 15w, no issues at all with it.

I just grabbed a Korg Ampworks for $60 for direct recording demos with. I think the use the same basic front end.

Re: I went guitar shopping today and came home with...

What does it sound like?

Was it made for a more heavy metal guy or a classic rock and blues player?

Nice and sweet.....And cute also there Vox brother Jeff......Very cool...

Re: I went guitar shopping today and came home with...

I like how they modernized the look on those. I think the retro Vox look scares away a lot of potential sales, due to the fact they're the best bedroom amp out there at that price. I wish the AD60 and 120 would be updated to the more 'rock/metal' look. They'd appeal a lot more to the people that are making use of it's great highgain tones. They introduced the AD100, which is what I'm talking about, although it has a few less features than the 60 and 120.

If I were you, I'd ask the store if you can upgrade to the AD100 head, then use it at home on your Marshall cab. Either way, they're great home practice rigs.

GJ.....I always get a chuckle when you mention the VTX head being a "bedroom amp"....Lately I'm in a bigtime Marshall mode, but I've had the same great tonal results with my Vox head...Wish you'd branch out on this and quit stereotyping the VT series as a bedroom amp brother! :fingersx: :)

I Know the Vox is a kid's toy compared to the really cool stuff you own,but maybe alot of guys are turned off when they hear the amp is only good in the home? I totally agree, but it rocks on gigs,is versatile, and has been a very reliable, great amp overall from day 1 for me! Last night it was right beside me as a spare in case one of our amps(My Marshall) were to go down:dance:

Re: I went guitar shopping today and came home with...

Gotta say, ive been playing through my cube loads these days (cant really crank the laney in the bedroom) and as much as i love it, and it only cost £60, i do miss not having actual amp models like i had with my old POD. After spending ages jamming with the band with the Laney and recording with it, the cube does just sound like a clean with some different types of fuzz in comparison! I know its alright, but the jump down from the laney is sometimes less inspiring! Anyways, if i had the money to splash around i would consider a vox.

what was wrong with your pod xtl for playing quietly or through headphones? and recording? that was the whole purpose of my podxt.

No Marshall cab in this home. Haven't had a marshall cab 15 or 16 years :laugh2:

But I know what you are saying. That said, The head and a cab would be overkill. I've got some pi$$y neighbors, plus I don't have a ton of room in the apt. The 60w combo would be OK...but this little thing is cool cos I can strap it around my shoulder, walk around the home with headphones or not. I'm moving soon though and I def will be looking for a place hopefully I can get a little more volume going, and a new bigger/better amp.

That said, this little thing cooks for what it is, and will suffice. Although the voicing is still not quite right for the 800, it sounds better than the Vt30/50 I had, and it's a bit more dynamic and "real amp-like" than the POD XTL or the Tonelab through my Atomic. In fact I ran this DA5 through the atomic and although it tightened up and got more punchy, the tone got totally squashed like the Tonelab did. The Vox stuff just doesn't work well with the Atomic for some reason. Also my VT30 and 50 were a nightmare...they either fried or I could never dial in a great tone on the 800 model. This little DA5 dialed right in. I think the speaker is voiced better.

As far as tones Firebird, it goes from pristine clean to rectifier, just like the Valvetronix series.

Nothing wrong with it per-se. But I wanted something that would be smaller and do double duty as a headphone amp, and bedroom amp. See my post above. I'm thinning out some gear. All my current guits, and the Atomic. new guit to be purchased soon.

Re: I went guitar shopping today and came home with...

Nice review, thanks Jeff! When I first heard about those DA5 amps I was really skeptical that an insanely small modeling combo like that could sound good. But now I know I was wrong!

Re: I went guitar shopping today and came home with...

posted a clip over in the clips forum :bigthumb:

Re: I went guitar shopping today and came home with...

Nice review Jeff. I saw one of those at our local Vox dealer, and just dismissed it as a cheap toy. Now I'll have to go back and try it.

I know what you're saying. I've tried solely practicing with a POD and headphones but there's just something about the sound coming out of the speaker into the room that we just 'need'. Plus, for myself, the headphones get annoying to wear after a short time. Enjoy the Vox!

Re: I went guitar shopping today and came home with...

The clip sounded good....What I really loved most, was the AC/DC and Nugent stuff....I'm all about the Plexi tones, but the 800 stuff sounded right too..

I understand about the headphones. The last time I played through them, something happened and I ended up putting two long scratches in my eyeglasses.:smack:

Good thing you had the eyeglasses!

Re: I went guitar shopping today and came home with...

Shouldn't this be in Amp Central? :p

:laugh2: Just messin with ya.

I've always thought those were cool looking little amps, but I've never tried one out. I might have to plug into one sometime. Looks like it might be a good amp to reccommend for beginners.

ahh gotcha. that's why i got my podxt instead of the xt live.. i wanted it to be as small as possible for easy playing when it needs to be quiet in whichever room i happen to need to be quiet in :)

looks like a nice one to suit those needs!
