Ibanez... Epiphone... what?

Ok... so... I'm getting my gal'pal a nice ole' instrument come September 19th (I think that's the date) but... now she wants to play guitar... it's hard to try to keep this a suprise, but now, she's all like, "bass is to... I don't know, let me play your guitars," so, I gotta cover the guitar bases... (not a pun!)
I was thinking an Ibanez Talman FTM60

cuase it's cute, has dual HB's and doesn't look too chinsey.
what are you guys' opinions on the insturment?
she also expressed interest in the bad-as$-isity of this monster

I'm thinking one of the two, if anyone has experience with said guitars, gimme' a bit'o'help please.

keep in mind, if I have the money, I'm'a put in at least on duncan, ya know? "Happy aniversary, here's a guitar that I put a new pickup into"

In the paul, I'll put at least a JB in the bridge, if I can, a 59'n in the neck. The Talman will get a 59' pair or perhaps a Seth Lover bridge and a 59'n.

I liked that Les Paul but it has really bassy pickups...nothing you can't fix easily.

I pretty much avoid Ibanez as a rule.

Get her a Fender Telecaster 'cuz that's what girls should play, gosh dernit

I was also seriously considering this:

but decided that the squier route was kind'a chinsey. I need to get something dual humbucker. She likes the way telecaster and esquiers look. Les Pauls, too.

I also considered this... cause, we're both irish and proud of it.. and she likes how bad-as$ this thing looks.

I agree about the belly cut. Only one of my previous girlfriends was a guitarist and she liked the Ibanez S because anything too blocky got in the way of her tits when she sat down and played. Hate to be graphic, but it's something to consider when you're buying. From what I've seen, girls like guitars that are light-weight and ergonomic and comfy.

there's a marked difference in tone here. the semi-hollow ibanez would be midrange inclined while the solid Epi has a strong bass signal. between the 2, the ibanez neck humbucker has more clarity to my ears.

yeah i've found the girls i know like lightweight stuff

i've been teaching my gf how to play a bit and she's played all my guitars and always picks out the squier strat, which has a thin body and is by far the lightest guitar i have

Only one of my previous girlfriends was a guitarist and she liked the Ibanez S because anything too blocky got in the way of her tits when she sat down and played. Hate to be graphic, but it's something to consider when you're buying.

I don't have to worry about that with my girlfriend... she's like... tiny. She doesn't really have tits... she's a 32A and barely fits in her bras. Poor her...
anyway, She's played my Epi, my Ibanez, my Sigma and my friend's SG, she liked the SG best becuase, "I can fit my hand on the neck," see, my guitars all have ludicrisly sized and shaped necks. So, my main concern is neck. Since she's pretty much flat chested and doesn't have a belly, either, any body shape goes.
I'm actually mostly leaning towards the Squier or the Ibanez, they both cost around 200 bucks and with the extra money I could trick out the electronics for her.

squiers have narrower necks as well which are easier for people with smaller hands to start on

well, I know, generally, Ibanez's has flat, wide necks, but this is an oddity of Ibanez... I'd like to track one down and try it out. I think I'll be making a trip to guitar center this week. YAY! PICKUPS!

I have that Epi Gothic LP Studio you listed above. It's really nice sounding and nice playing. It's also thiner and lighter than a Standard LP if that's an issue. The pickups sound like ass, the neck is mud and the bridge is icepick, although I did manage to get them to sound half decent with some adjusting.

Other than that, it's just standard Epi upgrades, ie. switch, electronics, nut, and tuners. I've found all of the above to be usable for now, and the tuning stability isn't too bad (doesn't generally slip, but will go slightly out of tune on occasion).

That said, if you get that LP, I'd plan on getting a set of pups sooner rather than later, because as soon as her ear develops, she'll know how bad those stock pups suck ass.

I would buy the Epi Goth LP, because it's a well built epiphone and with some new pickups it rocks your socks!

I had one for about 1,5 years ago, i changed the bridge pickup to a JB, and it became another guitar, in a positive way.

I'd get her the Celtic telecaster. It has multiple advantages,

1. The celtic thing (it is celtic right?)
2. thin neck (girls have small hands)
3. only one humbucker to upgrade (saves ya money and possibly more expenses in the future )
4. She already told you she likes the way a telecaster looks and also a les paul, this is a good inbetween shape with the arched top and all)
5.She already told you how badass this guitar looks (that's a hint man! open your senses!)
6. good price, decent quality
Finally let me give you some advice, and nuntius already told you but I'll post it again:

For what its worth, I tried out that first green-ish Ibby you posted back when I was looking at the JetKing. I really liked it - even more than the JK.

As for the flat-chested part, you can test her sense of humor about it.
Walk up to her and say, "I heard a joke that'll make you laugh your tits off . . .

the way you have the string strung, does that increase or decrease string tension? In anycase... I think I'll head the ibanez/squier route and upgrade right away... or the LP goth, who knows?

It doesn't really change the string tension, just the breaking angle over the saddles.

The decreased angle over the saddles is supposed to cut down on string breakage, and supposedly you can screw the tailpiece right down and increase sustain.

Personally, I did it because there's more room behind the saddles to rest you palm, which gives me more control over palm mutes, I don't really care about that other stuff (although I've yet to break a string on it).

I've heard a couple of people commend on quality of the Epi Gothic LP. Before I knew about those good comments I play tested a bunch of axes at the local store, and this one just felt really good to play. It could just be good luck that I happened to pick up one of those 1/1000 type guitars, but I keep hearing good things from others about them too.

Besides, if she quits playing on you, you're probably going to end up with that guitar back :wink:

I'm waiting to put EMG's into it, but they're on backorder around here and it's taking so bloody long I'm really temped to dump a JB/Jazz into it..... :yell:
