Ibanez LP Custom - fatty goes on a diet!

Re: Ibanez LP Custom - fatty goes on a diet!

Another weight trimming option for your consideration: Gotoh Stealth Tuners. Only 0.42 ounces per tuning key. So a set of six weights just over 2.3 ounces, whereas (for comparison purposes) a set of typical Grovers weighs over 9 oz. That's over 6 oz of weight reduction potential.

I used a set of these to replace Grovers on a Dean Icon guitar because it wasn't well balanced on its weight distribution and so it had a bit of a neck issue. One downside from my experience is that when tuning a string, you need to perform more turns of the key vs a normal design tuning key - i assume that is due to the shaft diameter being so small.
Another downside: costly - last time i looked (summer 2017), they were about $120.

Actually, a 3rd downside, it is a pretty difficult process to fill the empty space of each tuner's drill hole that is not occupied by the smaller diameter shaft Gotoh Stealth tuner.

Beautiful guitar. I never would have guessed that you could cut that much weight doing what you did.

I found that the best way to reduce weight on a single cutaway guitar is to buy an Ibanez S Series instead...!!! ;)

$20 on the tailpiece, I think the cover was $30. The DiMarzio pickup came out of another guitar I replaced a pickup in, that along with the caps and the pots were going in regardless of the weight issue.

It was more than worth it to me.

That’s all that matters then!!

Put it to use last night, 35 min set and it was great

Cool!
Seriously, change the bridge and the tuners (or just the tuner buttons) and I bet you could get that thing down to the weight of a heavy Gibson...

Re: Ibanez LP Custom - fatty goes on a diet!

I have a Burny LP copy that is prolly close to 12lbs. I love love love the guitar, but the weight kills my back.. I wish I had a scale, cuz Id really love to weigh it..

Glad it served you well at the gig!!

Re: Ibanez LP Custom - fatty goes on a diet!

Well I still just wasn't happy enough with Godzilla (finally got a name, just seemed appropriate) and I almost sold it in frustration, really glad I didn't

Did a job for a friend of mine and ended up with a set of Slash pickups to mess around with out of it so I dropped them in, good God they're freaking fantastic, and I saved another 1.2oz LOL!!!!

When I was but a young RnR fool I had a gorgeous '87 LPC with A2P's in it that was great sounding. For some reason I got away from that sound and never really jibbed with them again after that. They just never sounded right in anything else I had. Well I figured since these were easy enough to try I'd give them a shot. I know they're not exactly A2P's but apparently Slash had the same issue with his stuff and SD made him this set. Really just the perfect sound for this guitar, totally psyched.

You want to go nuts? Throw some Alumitones/Deathbuckers in there. They weigh nothing.
