Ibanez Super 58s

I rather like them. They have a nice open tone and softness, not agressive. I fear they might not be as harmonically rich as they should be.

I can never really decide whether to stay with this or go to a Duncan 59 or Gibson 57 Classic in a LP style and/or hollowbody.

Any thoughts?

I'll let ya know Thursday or Friday what I think of them. I've got a DT400 on the way with one in the neck :D

Re: Ibanez Super 58s

I always thought that they sound like the older DiMarzio PAFs. I think they are a little to fat in the neck (wooly and boomy on the low E) but not strong enough in the Bridge.
I had my DiMarzio rewound and they are nothing than great now.

Re: Ibanez Super 58s

Olin, I answered you other post about Ibanez guitars--I have the AS 120.

I really like the Super 58--it's a very vintage sounding pickup to my ear, and I can't think of any reason to change them in that guitar.

My thoughts exactly. I just played with my Jetking for awhile to remind myself. (Super 58 equiped.) If I start off with it, I can dial in some nice tones. Definitely mild-mannered. But as soon as I put it down and pick up one my Duncan-equiped axe's, its a night-and-day difference. The Duncans, even the "vintage" ones, have so much more richness and fullness.

I tried to like these Super 58's, but it ain't happening. Now . . . what to replace them with? PG's, maybe? ;)

Re: Ibanez Super 58s

Artie..are you talking about newer Super 58s, or the older models from the lawsuit era?

There's a big diff from my research on them.

Re: Ibanez Super 58s

I imagine mine are newer. They came in the Jetking that I just bought.

Re: Ibanez Super 58s

How are old Supers better than new ones?

Hmm as long as I don't A/B with Duncans - god knows Duncan 59s and Gibson 57s have a touch more chunk and harmonic goodness

Yes, i agree.
If you like them, why change?
They are really good, very balanced, very dinamycs and they respect the sonic quality of the guitar.
I only change a pickup if in some way it limits the guitar or my playing.

The original Super58s are supposed to be A3 magnets. current models are A5, I believe.

I haven't spent a ton of time with mine yet. But my first impressions are, it's a cool classic rock or blues/jazz pickup. It's not quite ballsy or thick enough for the John Sykes/Gary Moore singing neck lead tone, which unfortunately is what I need the neck pickup to do and how I use it 90% of the time.

Nice pup, but I'll replace mine if I keep my Destroyer.

Re: Ibanez Super 58s

I played the Mike Mushok Ibanez baritone, and remember thinking how good the Super 58s sounded. I really liked everything about the guitar, but that was the thing that really stuck with me.

Re: Ibanez Super 58s

For all of you who like them, there's going to be a set coming up for sale real soon, real cheap.
Barely used. ;)
