Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

This guitar reay interests me. Okay, forget that I play a bit of Country and am a Tele guy. I also do Fusion and such. The UV-777 is just a really cool-looking guitar to me. Anybody have any thoughts? I mean heck, if Johnny Hiland can use a PRS, why can't I use one of these?

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

I liked the one I had for a few years. The pickups were decent on it and I found the neck to be really nicely shaped. I found some 7 string necks tried to compensate for their extra string by slimming down so much that they just got unplayable to me.

The nut had to be shimmed and it got a fretjob and was decent, not great, but decent.

Stunning looking axe....that's probably why I held onto it half as long as I did. But in the end I just wasn't playing 7's anymore.

What's the chording like compared to a 6-string? Is it hard to get used to?

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

You won't be able to do thumb over chords on the E string, which may or may not be an issue for you.

It is a little bit weird having to remember that your E string isn't the bottom string any more, but that just takes time to ajust to. It's not impossible, just a bit disorientating to begin with.

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

Some people I talked to said that the first couple of months of playing a 7 will be like playing a 6 with an extra string tacked on to it. Later, it seems to just blend in.

Constructionwise, those I've seen have been OK, but personally, I don't care for that body shape.

I personally would ge with a used Carvin DC727C. With that one you get a Schaller Floyd and through-body construction.

Thanks for the thoughts so far. I have read that the treem unit that comes with the UV-777 is very nice... Also, if I use a 10-46 gauge set of strings, what do I use for the low B; a 52?

Alternatively... why not try an Ernie Ball/Music Man John Petrucci 7 string?

Good question...

To be honest, I like the looks of the UV-777 much better....

I never seemed to have a problem doing it...

Why not go for a Schecter, new Ibanez guitars have lost some of their former good quality.

Nice, but IMHO, none compare to the looks of the Universe...

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

Well, good or bad, I sound like "me" no matter what I play.... Take it for what it's worth...

Re: Ibanez UV-777 Universe...

If you're really interested in taking the plunge you might look into the Bari 7's. As someone mentioned earlier the scale length can make the low B seem a little floppy.

Some of the ESP Carpenter 7's are Bari scale and I've been eyeing them for awhile now.

It looks a little on the busy side to me. I really have never liked any of the Ibanez type guitars for myself though!!
