Ideas please: What to install into a 1976 Gibson LP Deluxe?

Hi all,

Minis are cool, but their output is quite low. My tele is more beefy. Maybe it is the pickups (stock ones from 1976).

Shall I think of conversion? Not my favorite option... still it is feasible.

Or p90's? Or p90 size HB's from the custom shop?

Thanks in advance.

I use a special wound A8 minihum in the bridge and a P90 in the neck.

P90 size HBs from DiMarzio... i know they got SuperDist and Tone Zone and I think a few others

No need to pay custom shop prices

Personally, I would sell all of my wife's cats if I could get a 76 with minis:-)

On the other hand it is an easy platform to modify. Would agree with any of the p90 options if you like p 90s and can deal with the noise.

Also have overwound Firebirds a couple of times to get more beef but it keeps the articulation of the mini size window in a humbucking pickup.

Duncan Mike Ness P90 in the Bridge, Vintage in the neck.

(The Hot and Custom are also great choices for the bridge, I use a Hot and two Vintage in my Triple P90 Guitar)

Re: Ideas please: What to install into a 1976 Gibson LP Deluxe?

What about a small boost circuit and keep the original pickups in?

Re: Ideas please: What to install into a 1976 Gibson LP Deluxe?

In fact, I cannot decide. I love the tone of the minis and sorta am thinking that I am stupid to swap them out instead of turning up the vol on the amp a bit more and/or using some clean boost pedal.

On the other hand, the guitar sounds great and alive you know... Here are two clips with them minis (first the bridge, the second the neck and no pedals... Just a plexi clone with JCM800 channel):

Excuse the shabby playing, the second one has some intonation issues...

Leave it be. Turn up. Play harder. Use fatter strings. Raise the pickups. Etc. Those pickups aren't THAT quiet. They can get plenty filthy IME.

There have been enough Deluxes modded or butchered over the years. Get one of those if you don't like mini hums. Sell the stock one to someone who wants a stock one.

Not a fun guitar to do swaps in either. The whole stock pickup/spacer/mounting ring is a soldered together assembly, which you have to break open even to swap in a hotter mini bucker. Those guitars stock with original orientation and original solders are getting harder to find. They'll be 50 years old soon, and aren't going to get any less rare or desirable in future years. Even if you go to P90's, which fit the routs, you have to modify the guitar to mount them, by adding holes in the cavity.

I had a Deluxe of that era. Minis killed in my JCM 800, and were quite nice in my Twin also. Of course, that's me, YMMV, and all that, but I'd really think it through before dumping them.

Keep the neck, put a P90size Super Distortion into the bridge

Id leave that alone it sounds great!
If anything maybe new pots and the such, but I don't even think Id do that.
Great playing also!

I love minis and there are some great options out there. The Duncan Antiquities are really nice. If you want more output, I'd check the options from Rio Grande. The Baby BBQ is about 12k and they will make a Baby Buffalo (about 10k) if you want one that isn't as hot. I have Lollars in my Kauer Banshee (Firebird) and they aren't bad at all.

Something like an RC booster or TC Spark that gives you some EQ control, in addition to the clean boost is a cheap option and can confirm if you can live with the current pickups or need to make a swap.

Re: Ideas please: What to install into a 1976 Gibson LP Deluxe?

I don't think there is a compelling enough reason to switch. They sound great. Maybe just get some sort of boost pedal when you need it.

The following is from an old thread about this guitar:

Just pulled that message here for your info guys...

Hi all,

I decided to pot the covers and the mags of the original mini HB's in my 1976 Gibson Deluxe. I liked them, but they were a bit microphonic. Hence, the operation... But to make matters worse, the height adjustment screws of the neck pickup were stripped. So first I had to deal with them screws. And having had no idea about the details of the routing... well it was sorta interesting endeavor to say the least.

I did do the potting thing. I also have taken pics of the magnets and inside of the pickup. Here they are:

And here is how it looks now:

I don't wanna butcher it really... I just wanna make use of it, because love the neck love the feel and response of that guitar. That's why I am thinking of letting it go.

The swap/mounting thingy is not much of a problem in my case, have some experience and mats for it. Still (as you say) it's not as easy as changing hbs...

That is a beauty. I would certainly be interested if you do decide to sell it in the end. I have always liked Deluxes.

Glad you already know all about how those pickups go together. That saves an explanation!

I won't dump the guitar for sure. And I am not gonna sell the pickups, just am thinkin whether or not I should try something new to make it sound better. :scratchch

Keep the neck, put a P90size Super Distortion into the bridge

Good option but I am not a fan of DiMarzio SD. If I were to take the HB route, I think I would get a Custom Shop Duncan HB wound (a 9K #42 PAF a5) to fit a P90 soapbar housing, and keep the neck. :scratchch

The other DiMarzio is a Tone Zone... I wish they'd do a Virtual PAF in a p90 size you know... That'd be a cheap solution for me.

I love minis and there are some great options out there. The Duncan Antiquities are really nice. If you want more output, I'd check the options from Rio Grande. Another part of me says that I have enough HB's... so keeping it with minis is a good option and maybe change the mag as hamerfan suggests... The neck is ok, the bridge could definitely use more output.

I don't think there is a compelling enough reason to switch. They sound great. Maybe just get some sort of boost pedal when you need it.

Clean boost.

Bill

That's what I am thinking at the moment, thanks guys. Getting confirmation is nice. :)

I've got a timmy, colorsound power boost clone called electric banana, Barber's B-Custom Cool hell of a clean boost ... Good suggestions, turn up the vol on the amp or boost it. That's why I feel a bit stupid for thinking about swaps and all. But cannot help it at times.

:banghead:

Thanks man, will check this out. They have small mags for deluxe minis I suppose? I gotta check the size of them...

You went ahead and did it anyways! Haha! I love your style!

Thing is you know the guitar and what you want from it, but for me hearing it for the first time and being impressed with it is the reason I suggested to leave it alone. If it sounds that good now it will only get better from here. Besides you can always return it to stock if it strays too far away from you tonally.

Edit:
Oops I see those pics are older, but still I stand by what I said cause I already know you're gonna dig into it, which I concur with you on the premise that you know what you want from it like I stated above.

On a side note I've been really liking A8 magnets myself lately.
