If I drop an A5 in the Alnico2 Pro what will I have?

Howls of derisive laughter.

an interesting neck pickup, better suited to a tele than an LP in my opinion

i dropped an A5 into an A2P neck model and was surprised at the difference. preferred the stock A2P in my LP neck but the "A5P" was still interesting there.

Fatter? Really?

How do you figure that?

I would think it would kill all the midrange and add a lot of high end...

I've got one in the bridge of my G&L Legacy HSS and was thinking of tossing an A5 in it

not to contradict Zhang, but i've heard both, depending on where it's going in.

in my LP i heard it as harder high and bottom ends, and it seemed to lose the bright warmth i'd gotten from it stock; still a cool sound but i preferred the A2 59 i did at the same time.
in the tele the stock A2P didn't have the same vibe to begin with, still great high end but sounded thin; the A5 seemed to fill the low end right out and gave it a harder character.
i preferred it to the de-gaussed A5 demon (12 slotted poles) i switched in next, which was a smokier stingier beast.
overkill, but i wanted something to match the hex-head DD in the bridge (not recommended)

I figure it because I tried it. It was neck A2P so the effect on the bass and low mids is more pronounced. HUGELY fatter. It's a different story in the bridge, you might get some obnoxious upper mids in the bridge position.

This is correct. That's why you put an A8 mag in it, then we talk.

Bridge T-tops were the main reason Di Marzio got rich selling his Super Distortion p'up back then.

I tried an A5P in the neck of my SG a few weeks back. It sounded a lot different. The sweetness disappears completely and it's not as thick and spongy anymore. I suggest have a try yourself because people here all seem to have different views. For example I may have found a bit more treble but certainly less low mids/bass as well but others say more bass. In theory you should get more bass/treble and less mids. But I guess that's just a theory. Like when people tell you A8 has more treble than A2. So that means a Custom 8 has more treble than a Custom Custom. I never found that myself.

Well, in this particular case, it depends on your rig. If your speakers are say, EVM, Jensen or other with a sweet round EQ in the highs, you may not be able to hear a difference. With Eminence Cannabis Rex, Celestion V30s or speciallyCelestion G12-65 or other more "hi-fi like" speakers, the difference, though subtle, IS there. Even though if you can make an A/B comparison between a Custom Custom and a Custom 8, you'll find the Custom 8 has more of everything! :bling:
