If I shorten the screw poles on a JB will it tighten the sound ?

Re: If I shorten the screw poles on a JB will it tighten the sound ?

Are you talking about lowering them or cutting them? If you lower the bass side, the bass response will be less. The JB isn't a really 'tight' pickup like the Custom, and I don't know if you can make it that way short of adding a ceramic magnet, or changing the pickup.

I put a regular ceramic in my JB and the low end is very tight now. I believe you can also try hex screws. I have some sitting around and haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Shorter screws will tighten up the pick attack. The head type doesnt really matter the length does. Most hex's are too long to really tighten a JB. If you want tight you will need to use like a dremel or a bench grinder and shorted them up quite a bit.

Remember though this changes the pick attack it doesnt really change the amount of bass the pickup has. So if the reason your JB sounds flubby is because your amp cant handle that much low end signal then cutting the screws will only have a slight effect

I will say that Hex Screws did make my JB a tad more focused and were the same length as the Flathead I took out of it...

But I have not tried shortening the actual pole length so I will leave that up to those who have.

1/2" hex screws WILL tighten the bass up nicely. Most standard filister slotted screws are a bit longer 5/8" IIRC. I have read people just cutting the standard screws flush with baseplate for improved tone (tightness of bass). Adding a hex variety will add to that as well. Personally, I usually do both.

Cutting the screws shorter is a quick and easy way to tighten the tone. it's subtle, however. So try it and see if it gets you where you want to go.

I put hex screws which were slightly shorter than the stock flatheads on my JB. They came off a DiMarzio PAF Pro... or Dominion, can't remember. They did thin it up a little, and they made it a little tighter, but not a lot. Slightly spongy/boomy low-mid response is still there. It sounds good, though. It's always sounded good, but I think the change was subtle.

I have put hex screws in a JB before, and it is a little tighter. That's it though. Any of the mods done on a JB alter the sound a bit- although you can still hear that JB-ness coming through. If that is all you need, then great. If not, there are lots of other choices.
