If you like the APH set you'll like.....

Just installed a APH 2 in the neck of my guitar. Really like the warm vocal tones with a nice rounded top end. Amazingly, this is the first time I have ever tried this model. I have a APH 1 on the way for the bridge. Just out of curiosity....what other pickups on the market compare to the APH? Not the Slash set just to be clear.

Bare Knuckle pickups Old Guard humbuckers and Tonerider Alnico 2 Classic humbuckers are the first two to pop up into my mind, I am sure there are others :)

the aph2 is the slash neck. unless we are talkin about the uss pinkney :)

Re: If you like the APH set you'll like.....

APH-2: Slash
APH-1: original pickup the Slash was based on.

I am a huge APH-1 fan. I haven't found any other pickup that does that sort of thing so well. It seems like there should be many more out there, but I haven't come across any other ones.

It's a really nice pickup with a bell-like tone on the high end. The APH shares a wind with the Jazz, so if you need a more toothy or a more scooped version the Jazz is the answer.

I A/B’d a bridge 57 Classic Plus with my buddy’s Slash set when I installed them in his LP. They sounded a whole lot alike.

So I’ll say the 57 Classics are in that ballpark.

Any PAF-type wind that you throw an alnico 2 magnet in would be close. So you can experiment with more commonly available PAF-types that have alnico 5 magnets.

With a magnet swap the Jason Becker PB is like an APH-1 on steroids. I like the PB as is, but with some rigs it’s a bit bright for my taste. As an experiment I put an A2 in it. The sharpness rolled back to a better pallet and the bass got a bit of give. Overall an A2 PB and an APH-1 is the best combo in a Les Paul I can imagine.

Re: If you like the APH set you'll like.....

I would say A2s in the 59s. The 59s are as glossy and scooped as the Jazz, A2s add some mids to the A2P. The winds in general sound pretty similar to me. The differences are the character on the Jazz/A2P is a lil more neutral or modern while the 59 is more Gibsony. And the 59 has a little fatter bass which you can adjust easily with the height of the bass side of the pickup.

Installed the APH 1 yesterday, and although I liked the Pearly Gates I had in the bridge just fine, I much prefer the APH 1 without a doubt. Just balances better with the APH 2 tonally. The PG has this nasty sort of nasally push in the mids, where the APH 1 is more smooth with a flatter EQ response. I know these pickups have been around for quite awhile, but this is my first experience with them. I honestly can't imagine it getting much better.
